The mass shooting occurred on the 900 block of Pine Street in Vienna, approximately 50 miles from Macon, shortly after 1:20 a.m. Police reports indicate that at least 35 individuals, aged between 14 and 51, were also injured in the incident. The conditions of the victims varied widely, with some reported to be in critical condition while others were stabilised.
The event had drawn an overwhelming crowd of over 1,000 attendees, a number that Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy suggested contributed to the chaos. During a press conference held on the same day, he observed that people began arriving all at once, partly due to inclement weather conditions that encouraged attendees to gather under one roof. He noted that the city had not issued any permits for the event, thereby raising questions about its organisation.

Sheriff Peavy emphasized that this was not a time for assigning blame, remarking, “This had nothing to do with the city not having a police department at this time. I believe this would have happened anyway. The amount of people was the problem.” He added, “Manpower wasn’t a problem Saturday night because I had all my dedicated men and women in law enforcement out working. I could have had 50 working, and I don’t think it would have done any good.”
In the aftermath of the shooting, GBI Director Chris Hosey announced that six investigative units from different regions of Georgia had been mobilised to assist in the case. During the press briefing, he indicated that the majority of those who were injured sustained gunshot wounds, underscoring the serious nature of the incident.
While the shooting was part of a larger event associated with homecoming weekend for Dooly County High School, Sherrod Willaford, superintendent of the Dooly County School System, clarified that it did not take place at a school-sanctioned function. Addressing the impact of the violence, Willaford acknowledged that it could affect students and their families, stating, “We recognise that its impact may reach many of our students, families and staff.” In response to the tragedy, schools would implement additional safety measures when they reopened.
Authorities are actively seeking information regarding the incident and have encouraged anyone with relevant details to step forward. The GBI Regional Investigative Office in Perry is open for tips at (478) 987-4545. Additionally, anonymous tips can be submitted through a dedicated hotline or online platform.
The aftermath of this shooting has left the Dooly County community in shock and mourning as they come to terms with the loss of two lives, the injuries sustained by so many, and the trauma inflicted on families and friends. As investigations continue, local residents are reminded of the importance of community safety and vigilance in the face of such violence.
