Colin Stough, the emerging talent from the American Idol stage, has recently found himself at a crossroads in both his personal and professional life. Following a tumultuous spell marked by a DUI arrest in February 2025, Stough has shared how this challenging incident sparked significant growth and reconciliation in his relationship with fiancée Mckenzie Rhett.

Sitting in a Tennessee jail cell after his arrest for driving under the influence, underage drinking, and failing to exercise due care post-accident, the 22-year-old reflected on his circumstances. “All I wanted to do was call my fiancée,” he recounted. At the time, however, the couple was on a break, complicating his desire to reach out. Nevertheless, that moment of vulnerability became a turning point, allowing them to reconnect.

Stough, who first captured audiences nationwide with his stirring performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” during the show’s 21st season, has since embraced a path of accountability. “I let a lot of people down, and I let myself down,” he stated candidly. Yet, he recognised that dwelling on the past would not solve anything. “I can’t change the past… so I’ve decided to grow from it,” he added.
Accepting responsibility is crucial to Stough’s journey. “I made a mistake, and I’m human,” he said, acknowledging that such experiences have allowed him to rectify his missteps and continue his music career. He aims to blend honesty with artistry in his work, a reflection of his musical influences ranging from The Allman Brothers to Conway Twitty.
In this spirit of authenticity, Stough revisited his track “Bone Dry,” a collaboration with renowned blues-rock musician Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Originally released in July, the song embodies what Stough describes as an “unperfect perfectness.” “When you hear it, it sounds like a heartbreak,” he explained, but emphasised its relatability for anyone facing adversity, whether that’s loss, a career setback, or personal struggles.
The genesis of “Bone Dry” was quite whimsical. While in a writing session with Gavin Lucas and Jackson Inman, Stough admitted to being devoid of inspiration. “I said, ‘Dude, I’m bone dry,’” he laughs, recalling the moment. This candidness sparked creativity, leading to poignant lyrics that explore themes close to his heart.
Stough’s decision to allow the instrumentation to breathe in “Bone Dry” was deliberate. “I’m a very acoustic writer,” he noted, reflecting on how the collaborative flow in the studio helped shape the song’s emotional core. A piano flourish from his guitarist, he said, enhanced the track, transforming it into a raw and authentic piece.
Beyond his music, Stough’s personal life remains integral to his artistry. He continues to engage in the activities that ground him, including working with livestock, which brings him joy and connection to his roots. “I love living life, and Kenzie loves living life,” he stated, recognising the balance he seeks.
As he embraces this phase of his life, Stough also attributes his resilience to support from others and a reconnection with his faith. “I’m far from perfect,” he remarked, admitting that he had tested his spiritual path. “I lived right for two weeks, and I saw the outcome,” he recalled, contrasting it with previous choices. This experience led him to abandon some of his old ways and foster a new perspective in his life.
Colin Stough’s journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, growth, and the importance of genuine connections. With the release of “Bone Dry (Revisited)” and a renewed sense of purpose, he stands ready to embrace whatever the future holds, both in his music and his personal life.
