Sienna Sage, a 25-year-old entrepreneur, recently faced an unfortunate travel mishap while attempting to return from Aruba. What should have been a straightforward journey to the airport transformed into a nearly 90-minute ordeal, leaving Sage to reflect on the challenges of travel logistics.
Sage, the founder of holistic textured haircare brand Flourish by Sage, set out for the airport from her accommodation shortly before 4:00 p.m. with plenty of time to spare for her 5:55 p.m. flight. However, due to two separate car accidents along the route, what started as a quick 10-minute trip quickly became a stressful race against time.

In a TikTok video, Sage documented her experience, explaining how heavy traffic unexpectedly emerged as her car made its way to the airport. Initially, she remained calm, but as the congestion intensified and precious minutes slipped away, her confidence began to wane. “What was supposed to be a simple 10-minute ride turned into almost an hour and a half,” she recounted, expressing her growing anxiety about making her flight.
Upon finally arriving at the airport at 4:47 p.m., Sage was met with another shock. Despite having arrived more than an hour ahead of her scheduled departure, all the airline check-in desks were closed. “We were completely caught off guard because there was no one left to check us in,” she said, still somewhat incredulous at the situation.
Staff at the airport informed her that the check-in counters typically closed at 5:00 p.m., yet Sage learned that on that particular day, the desks had been shut well before she arrived. Compounding her frustration was the fact that U.S. Customs, required for international departures, also closed around that time, presenting yet another hurdle to her travel plans.
Before this experience, Sage was unaware that such late arrivals could lead to difficulties with check-in, emphasising the unpredictability of travel experiences. Until that final day, she had encountered little traffic during her stay on the island, making this abrupt delay particularly surprising.
As the reality of missing her flight set in, a local resident, Kenneth, came to her aid. A driver with experience in assisting government officials, he attempted to contact managers at U.S. Customs and United Airlines to find a solution. Regrettably, despite these efforts, Sage had to accept the disappointment of an unplanned extra night on the island.
In light of the situation, Sage quickly arranged accommodation, opting for a last-minute ocean-view suite conveniently located near the airport. The following day, United Airlines offered her and her companion complimentary access to the next flight to Newark, allowing them to salvage their trip by enjoying an evening walk on the beach and a delightful dinner.
After sharing her experience on social media, other travellers began responding, recounting similar anecdotes of missed flights and frustrations encountered at airports, particularly in Aruba. Conversations sparked amongst those who had faced similar challenges, highlighting the common struggles of air travel.
Sage discovered that her travel page, Sienna’s Itinerary, which she originally developed out of her passion for travel, became a platform for sharing not only picturesque moments but also invaluable lessons from the less glamorous side of travel. “I think people can learn just as much from unexpected moments as they can from the highlights,” she noted.
By recounting her experience, Sage aims to help others navigate potential pitfalls in their journeys. Her belief that sharing knowledge can lead to smoother travel experiences illustrates the broader theme that not all aspects of travel are pristine; at times, the difficulties provide the most memorable lessons. As travel continues to be a part of her life, Sage hopes her stories will inspire others to embrace both the good and the not-so-good moments while exploring the world.
