Halle Berry and her former partner Olivier Martinez have recently been in the spotlight due to their rocky co-parenting relationship concerning their son, Maceo. According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the pair engaged in “co-parenting therapy” aimed at resolving conflicts and improving their communication. This therapeutic intervention began in May 2024, when both celebrities, now aged 60, agreed to the sessions to create a more harmonious co-parenting dynamic for their then-nine-year-old son.

The therapy was structured to include individual meetings followed by six joint sessions with a coach chosen by both parties. Notably, Berry’s fiancé, musician Van Hunt, was allowed to join the sessions. Following these initial meetings, the coach was expected to assess whether further therapy sessions were necessary.

Despite this attempt at reconciliation, tension between the former couple has persisted. In August 2024, Berry filed a motion in court, requesting intervention and alleging that Martinez had consistently breached agreements and court orders, actions which she claimed were detrimental to both their son and their strained co-parenting relationship. Observers familiar with the situation noted that Martinez and Berry have contrasting approaches to parenting, complicating their efforts to co-parent effectively. “Co-parenting hasn’t been easy,” a source shared. “They both love Maceo…he’s a very focused student. Halle tries to keep his life private.”
Berry and Martinez’s divorce was finalised in August 2023 after lengthy negotiations that extended almost eight years. As part of the settlement, both were granted joint legal custody, and Berry agreed to monthly child support payments of £8,000, along with a percentage of any income exceeding £2 million. Furthermore, Berry is responsible for covering Maceo’s private school costs, including tuition, uniforms, and extracurricular activities, with a commitment to reimburse Martinez for expenses incurred during the 2023/2024 school year.
The couple initially sought to divorce in October 2015, after two years of marriage. At that time, Berry and Martinez jointly released a statement regarding their decision to separate, indicating they were committed to co-parenting their son amicably.
Further complications arose when Berry was ordered to attend a court-mandated mediation session on 14 October 2024, as outlined in court documents acquired recently. Martinez had previously sought a temporary restraining order against Berry, claiming she inflicted “emotional and mental distress” due to alleged physical abuse towards their child, Maceo. Portions of this request were granted by the court, temporarily altering Berry’s visitation arrangement with her child.
In response to these allegations, Berry’s attorney, Marina Beck, vehemently defended her client, characterising Martinez’s claims as “entirely meritless and deliberately misleading.” Beck asserted that there is substantial evidence demonstrating Martinez’s repeated violations of court orders which have adversely affected their son. “Halle is deeply saddened,” Beck remarked, “but she will not allow this to deter her from fighting for Maceo’s best interests.”
Martinez’s legal representation responded to the allegations, expressing concern for the safety and welfare of Maceo as the primary motivation for filing the restraining order. Martinez’s lawyer, Patrick Baghdaserians, highlighted the challenges inherent in co-parenting relationships, stating, “Our paramount concern right now is only one real issue, and that’s protecting this great kid.” Baghdaserians characterised Martinez as “a loving parent” who is trying to navigate a complicated situation.
As both Berry and Martinez embark on their separate paths, the continued developments in their co-parenting arrangement and any legal decisions impacting their family dynamics will be closely monitored. Given the complexities and ongoing issues, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and what steps both parents will take to ensure Maceo’s welfare in the future.
