A day that began with concern in a North Alabama emergency department concluded with unexpected joy for a newlywed couple. John Como and his fiancée Diane had intended to finalise their marriage certificate on Saturday, September 5. However, plans took an abrupt turn when Como received a call from his doctor urging him to go straight to Huntsville Hospital’s Emergency Department due to worrying blood test results.

The unexpected visit to the hospital was a jarring shift for the couple, who had prepared for a celebratory day. Como’s nurse practitioner, Beth Gates, recognised the distress this unfortunate turn of events caused for Diane. Determined to salvage what she could of the couple’s wedding plans, Gates set out to find a notary public within the hospital to officiate their marriage.

Gates’ efforts paid off when she located Shoyna Alexander, a licensed notary who was nearby. Without hesitation, Alexander agreed to help, witnessing the couple sign their marriage certificate right in the emergency room’s exam room, aptly labelled C-29. Photos released by the hospital capture the moment well, showing the couple’s pure delight as they shared a kiss, marking the official start of their union.
The hospital staff went above and beyond to create a celebratory atmosphere for the makeshift wedding. Licensed practical nurse Keria Lightfoot took it upon herself to visit a nearby supermarket to gather celebratory supplies. She returned with flowers, cupcakes, plastic champagne flutes, and even a bottle of sparkling white grape juice for the newlyweds. The spontaneous gestures uplifted what had been a worrying day.
On the day of the wedding, ER attendant Carter Kimbrough donned the role of ‘sommelier’ by distributing champagne flutes, while his colleague Nola Bearden crafted a sign that proclaimed “Just Married” for the couple. Additionally, Samantha Ring, a representative for patient and family services, created charming yellow paper rings for the couple to exchange, which were adorned with meaningful inscriptions such as “Just Married” and the date “9/5/26” on each ring.
The staff’s efforts transformed the challenging situation into one of pure joy. Following their union, a photo shared on social media depicted the couple, with Como in a hospital bed yet beaming with happiness while Diane was right by his side. The caption accompanying the photo summarised the day’s remarkable turn from fear to love: “What started as a frightening day turned into a romantic ending — right in the middle of North Alabama’s busiest Emergency Department,” the hospital articulated.
John Como expressed his gratitude for the kindness shown by the hospital staff, stating, “It just warmed our hearts that they would care enough to do that. We were in this terrible situation of having to go to the emergency department, but they made it a golden moment.” Como is a retired Army colonel who began dating Diane after losing his wife of over 40 years last year.
Following their marriage, Como was admitted to the oncology unit for further treatment. He was released on September 23, marking another chapter in a journey filled with unexpected challenges and wonderful surprises. In reflecting on his experience, he emphasised the compassion of the Huntsville Hospital staff, noting, “People need to know that the staff at Huntsville Hospital has a heart.”
As they embark on their new life together in Fairhope, Alabama, the couple is filled with hope for the future. The hospital’s social media post concluded with well wishes for the couple: “Congratulations, John and Diane! May your next chapter be filled with love, laughter, and many happy years together.” Their story stands as a testament to the warmth of the human spirit, even in the most unexpected of circumstances.
