In a remarkable journey of resilience and hope, Talicia Durham, a 33-year-old nurse practitioner from South Carolina, has emerged victorious in her battle against breast cancer. After experiencing a vivid dream in early 2024 that foreshadowed her diagnosis, Durham discovered a concerning lump that would change the course of her life.

Prior to her diagnosis, Durham, a mother of three, was 20 weeks pregnant with her fourth child when she noticed the lump in her breast. Initially, medical professionals, including her doctor and radiologists, suspected it to be a benign cyst. They reassured her to simply monitor it, scheduling a follow-up six months later. However, upon her return in April 2025, with her pregnancy progressing, the lump had increased in size.
Despite initial reassurances, the results of a biopsy confirmed that Durham had cancer. “When I received the call, my first thought was for my unborn child,” she reflected. The diagnosis came with a wave of anxiety and uncertainty, as Durham’s focus shifted to the health of her baby, due to arrive in a few months.

Determined to fight for her family, Durham began chemotherapy treatments shortly after her diagnosis, undergoing four rounds every three weeks. She paused treatment in preparation for the arrival of her daughter, Ava, who was born on 30 August 2025, three weeks early but healthy, weighing 5 lbs and 5 oz. Durham’s joy was immense, although she faced a daunting challenge as she resumed chemotherapy just 12 weeks postpartum while also caring for Ava and her three older children, aged 12, 8, and 5.
With her husband Derek, a 35-year-old employee at a railroad company, by her side, Durham was bolstered by a support system that helped ease her burdens at home, allowing her to focus on her recovery. “Derek took on many responsibilities so that I could rest,” she noted, emphasising the significance of family support during her treatment.

In the midst of her battles, Durham leaned on her faith. She recounts an inspiring dream where she felt a message of reassurance from a higher power: “You’re going to make it through. You’re going to be fine.” This sense of spiritual support provided her with resilience throughout her ordeal. “Whenever I felt sick, I kept telling myself that it was just temporary,” Durham explained. She believed in maintaining an active spirit, emphasising that inactivity would only worsen her situation.
Earlier this year, she underwent a double mastectomy as part of her treatment plan, and by February, she received the news she and her family had been hoping for: her cancer was in remission. Although she continues to take medication for endocrine therapy, her spirit remains unbroken.
Durham’s experience has instilled powerful lessons within her; she encourages women to trust their intuition regarding their health. “It is vital to listen to your body. Don’t dismiss your feelings,” she advised. She also emphasised the significance of maintaining faith, irrespective of one’s beliefs: “Always know that a higher power has your back. It can provide strength when you feel weak.”
Her journey is not just a testimony to surviving cancer; it embodies the spirit of resilience and the strength of community during times of struggle. As Durham reflects on her challenges, she also appreciates the ordinary moments with her children, embracing life after cancer with renewed hope.
As she carries on, Talicia Durham stands as a beacon of courage, reminding others that even amidst adversity, life can flourish anew.
