Mariah Carey recently marked a significant milestone in her career with the celebration of the 25th anniversary of her film, Glitter. On 30 September, the singer took to Instagram to share a striking image where she wore a stunning diamond necklace valued at a remarkable £1.5 million, showcasing her trademark style.
In her Instagram post, the 57-year-old performer donned a white tank top emblazoned with the word “Loverboy” in blue, layered beneath a stylish black leather jacket. Accompanying the photo, Carey expressed her excitement with a caption that read, “New Glitter merch!! ✨✨”. The post highlighted her efforts to commemorate the film’s anniversary not only with a glitzy appearance but also through a fresh line of merchandise.

The ornate necklace caught the attention of fans and fashion enthusiasts alike. Designed by Leviev, the necklace features an impressive 44.71 carats of pear-shaped natural diamonds set in luxurious 18-karat white gold. The central pendant itself has an incredible weight of 14 carats. The jeweller confirmed its staggering price to Page Six shortly after Carey’s post.
Carey complemented her opulent jewellery with a pair of elegant diamond drop earrings and sported her long, honey-blonde hair styled in loose waves, further enhancing her eye-catching look. The combination of her fashionable ensemble and extravagant accessories illustrated her flair for glamour as she celebrated an important chapter in her life.
Reflecting on the impact of Glitter during a recent interview with Variety, Carey shared insights into her feelings about the film. In March, while discussing her nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she hinted at projects to honour the film’s anniversary, stating, “[There are] plans for a deluxe and a reissue, or maybe just one, I don’t know. We’re getting on top of it. I’m excited about it.”
Glitter, directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall, premiered on 21 September 2001 and is loosely based on aspects of Carey’s own life. Unfortunately, the film did not fare well at the box office, only earning approximately £5.3 million globally. Compounding its challenges, the soundtrack was released just days prior, coinciding tragically with the events of 11 September when terrorist attacks shook the United States.
In her conversation with Variety, Carey disclosed her evolving perspective on Glitter, reflecting on its initial reception. “I used to hate it. I used to be so like, ‘Why did I do that?’” she admitted, referring to the film as “a disastrous flop” set against a difficult backdrop. However, she acknowledged a shift over the years, realising that the project eventually grew to hold a special place in her heart.
Despite its rocky start, the film and its accompanying soundtrack have undergone a revival in recent years. Fans launched the #JusticeForGlitter campaign in 2018, which aimed to re-evaluate the film and its music, leading to renewed appreciation among audiences. The initiative resulted in the soundtrack skyrocketing to the iTunes Top 10 albums chart, a remarkable achievement 17 years following its original release.
Carey’s recent celebrations serve as a testament to the journey Glitter has taken over the past quarter-century. What once began as a challenging chapter in her career has transformed into a work of nostalgia that continues to resonate with fans, illustrating the fluidity of public perception in the entertainment industry.
As Carey continues to embrace the celebrations surrounding Glitter, both she and her loyal supporters look forward to what the upcoming projects might hold and how they might further elevate the legacy of this iconic film. With new merchandise and potential reissues on the horizon, it’s clear that Mariah Carey is determined to shine a light on this significant milestone in her artistic journey.
