A man from Oklahoma is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Michigan after being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder. Dewey Barber has been on a ventilator since September 12, following a trip intended to attend a University of Oklahoma football game. Tragically, he was unable to reach the stadium due to a sudden and alarming medical condition.

The situation has taken a dramatic turn, as Barber began experiencing significant loss of movement in his legs the morning before the game. According to his daughter, Tosha Inman, he woke up unable to get out of bed, which ultimately led to his hospitalisation. Inman described her father’s condition, saying, “He has partial paralysis on one side of his face, but he is able to communicate when he’s awake—head nods and head shakes.”

Barber’s diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome—a disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s nerves—has left him with increased dependency on life-support measures. This auto-immune condition can lead to varying degrees of weakness, numbness, and even paralysis. Local news sources have reported on his family’s distressing experience since they received this life-altering news.
Inman has expressed hope about the future, stating that the family is making arrangements for Barber to be transferred to a hospital closer to Oklahoma. They are currently waiting for a referral necessary for the transfer, which Inman anticipates will soon be granted. “We have Angel Med-Flight on standby, just waiting,” she added, indicating that the family is prepared for the logistics of his transport.
However, there is a significant financial hurdle to overcome. The flight back to Oklahoma, which is equipped to handle intensive care patients, will not be covered by insurance. To help facilitate his safe return home, Barber’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign. As of now, the fundraising effort has garnered nearly £7,000 of their £14,500 target.
Inman highlighted the nature of the flight, explaining, “It’s basically a private plane that’s been fitted with a full ICU. There will be medical staff on the plane. My mum should be able to fly with him.” The necessity of the flight captures the urgency of their situation, as they seek to bring Barber closer to home for continued treatment.
The appeal for funds has resonated with many, illustrating the compassion of the wider community during such a challenging time. The description of the GoFundMe reads, “In just a matter of days, everything changed. Dewey became paralyzed, dependent on a ventilator, and now has a tracheostomy.” Such stark realities have led to greater awareness of the challenges faced by families dealing with severe medical emergencies.
As the family waits for updates and while the community gathers support, they remain hopeful for Dewey’s recovery. The situation serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly life can change due to unforeseen medical conditions. Hopefully, with the help of generous donations, Barber will soon be on his way back to Oklahoma, where he can receive the care he needs closer to his family.
