On 19th September, members of the Carnival Cruise Line team took part in the 41st International Coastal Cleanup Day, collaborating globally to enhance the health of shorelines and waterways. This year’s initiative saw participation from over 480 Carnival staff across 31 clean-up activities, contributing significantly towards the efforts to remove plastic and other debris from various coastal areas.

The clean-up operations, which extended throughout September, resulted in the removal of more than 5,000 pounds of waste, including a notable amount of single-use items such as plastic bags and aluminium cans. Carnival’s involvement in this annual campaign aligns with its wider commitments to sustainability, particularly in addressing the pressing issues surrounding marine pollution.
Team members from Carnival Cruise Line gathered along shores from Miami and Cozumel in Mexico to the picturesque coastlines of Seattle and the Netherlands. The initiative not only engaged shipboard staff—of which 377 participated across 29 ships—but also involved 111 shoreside employees, reflecting a comprehensive effort supported by local community partners.

Completion of the clean-ups was marked on 30th September by the Carnival Glory ship, achieving a notable milestone of 100% participation throughout the fleet. In total, approximately 175 bags filled with rubbish were collected, illustrating both the commitment of Carnival employees and the extent of pollution affecting popular coastal destinations.
Cleanup locations spanned major Carnival homeports in the U.S., including Galveston, Texas, and Miami, alongside international sites in Alaska, the Caribbean, The Bahamas, and Europe, with countries such as Greece, France, and Australia joining the cause. These endeavours add to Carnival’s ongoing environmental initiatives, which have seen team members collect over 7,200 pounds of debris since the beginning of the year.
Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, highlighted the collective effort of the team in her comments. She stated, “We have the privilege of operating on the world’s oceans and visiting some of its most beautiful coastal destinations, and with that privilege comes a responsibility to protect them.” Her statement in a company blog post emphasises the need for corporate responsibility in the face of environmental challenges.
The clean-up campaigns are part of Carnival’s broader sustainability roadmap, which includes ambitious targets to reduce reliance on single-use items onboard, improve wastewater management systems, and minimise food waste. This proactive approach underlines the company’s commitment to preserving cleanliness in the oceans and maintaining the vibrancy of marine ecosystems.
International Coastal Cleanup Day is regarded as the largest global beach and waterway clean-up event. Organised by Ocean Conservancy, this important day takes place every third Saturday in September. Since its inception in 1986, it has mobilised over 19 million volunteers worldwide, who collectively have removed more than 400 million pounds of trash from coastal areas, illuminating the significant impact of community-driven efforts in environmental conservation.
Carnival’s clean-up events not only contribute to an immediate reduction in waste but also serve to raise awareness about the critical challenges facing our oceans. The collective actions of the dedicated team members highlight an essential movement towards sustainability, demonstrating the potential for positive change when individuals unite for a common cause. As the industry continues to evolve, the importance of such initiatives is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable future for maritime and coastal environments alike.
