College Student Allegedly Posed as High School Runner, Then Hid in Woods and Attacked Teen Mid-Race

A 19-year-old college student from Georgia has been arrested after allegedly attacking a teen runner during a high school cross-country event. Aiden Dombrowski, a former member of a local high school cross-country team, was taken into custody following the incident that occurred on 26 September at the Coweta Cup Cross Country Championship, held at Newnan High School.

According to a statement released by the Newnan Police Department, officers were summoned to the scene shortly before 8 a.m. on Saturday. Witnesses reported that during the race, Dombrowski emerged from nearby woods wearing an East Coweta High School cross-country jersey and brandishing rocks. Witnesses stated that he ran towards the victim, pushing him and striking him with his fists.

The victim reportedly defended himself, forcing Dombrowski to retreat into the woods. Shortly after the altercation, Dombrowski surrendered to police in a parking area close to the scene. Authorities noted that he had changed his attire, but they discovered the East Coweta jersey in his vehicle.

Bodycam footage obtained by local news outlets revealed an exchange between the police and Dombrowski during his arrest. When asked if he knew the victim, Dombrowski acknowledged their acquaintance but denied any prior animosity between them. “I know him. I’m not friends with him,” he stated. Further questioning led him to explain that the incident had arisen from a prank gone wrong.

Dombrowski, who previously competed for the cross-country team at Northgate High School, is currently enrolled at the University of Georgia in Athens. According to his recruiting profile, he had ambitions to excel in running and academics, expressing determination and a strong work ethic.

Investigators revealed that he travelled from Athens the night before the incident, reportedly sleeping in his car, before donning the opposing team’s jersey on race day.
