Sheinelle Jones, co-host of *Today with Jenna & Sheinelle*, has opened up about the challenges she has faced following the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh, and the subsequent fallout from fake artificial intelligence (AI) content. Uche passed away in March 2025 at the age of 45 after battling glioblastoma, leaving behind Sheinelle and their three children: Kayin, 17, and twins Clara and Uche Jr., both 14. Since Uche’s death, Jones has remained protective of her children’s privacy, keeping them largely out of the public eye during a trying period in their lives.

On 28 September 2026, Jones shared her ordeal with fake AI-generated images and stories, revealing how they have added to her grief. During a segment on *Today*, she recounted her experience of coming across misleading AI images, noting an episode where she was deceived by a fake Facebook post that featured herself and her late husband. “I was fooled for a moment,” she admitted. The post presented an altered image of Uche that did not reflect how he truly looked, which prompted her to critically examine the content before realising it was not genuine.

Jones further revealed that her mother also fell victim to these deceptive images. Her mother had contacted her, excited about purported family pictures circulating on social media, unaware they were fabricated. This shared experience of being misled by technology has proved to be distressing for Jones and her family.
Perhaps the most poignant moment for Jones came from encountering a fictitious story in which she and her children were supposedly interviewed by Katie Couric. The false article not only featured a made-up conversation but also presented edited images that reimagined her home. “There was this one where it looked like we were sitting with Katie in my living room, but it wasn’t my living room at all,” she explained. A keen-eyed friend helped her spot that the likeness of her daughter Clara was incorrect—an unsettling experience that left Jones frustrated and hurt.
Expressing her dismay, Jones indicated a desire to address the misinformation publicly but felt restrained by advice not to engage with falsehoods. “I wanted to comment and say, ‘This isn’t me’, but I’ve been advised that acknowledging it might lend it credibility,” she reflected. Her co-host, Jenna Bush Hager, also expressed her outrage, condemning the creators of such deceptive content. “It’s heartbreaking to see someone capitalising on another person’s pain,” Hager stated, adding that the exploitation of grief in such a manner is utterly unacceptable.
After a period of absence from the show due to her husband’s illness and passing, Jones made her return to *Today*, where she was emotionally surprised by the presence of her children during a special segment highlighting her new book. In a recent interview, she revealed that her decision to largely keep her kids away from the public was driven by a fierce maternal instinct to protect them. “I’m a mama bear; I’m protective of my children, so I’ve been selective about what I’ve shared,” she noted, acknowledging the care taken to preserve their wellbeing amidst their mourning.
Reflecting on the bittersweet nature of watching her children grow, Jones conveyed a mix of joy and nostalgia as they appear on-screen together. “Seeing them turn into young men was such a special moment for me,” she shared, underscoring the emotional weight of her journey as a single mother navigating grief while also celebrating her children’s milestones.
While the rise of AI technology offers exciting possibilities, the misleading narratives and images it can generate pose significant ethical concerns, particularly for those dealing with personal grief. Jones’s experience illustrates the painful intersection of technology and reality, emphasising the importance of responsible content creation and the impact misinformation can have on individuals and families.
As she continues to navigate life without her husband, Jones remains an advocate for the truth, raising awareness about the challenges posed by misinformation in the digital age while highlighting the enduring strength of family bonds.
