Criminal defence attorney and former Deputy District Attorney for northern New Mexico, John W. Day, has stepped into the discussion, providing insights into why this lack of communication from law enforcement may be a strategic choice. In an interview with PEOPLE, Day suggested that officials might be withholding information to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
According to Day, when authorities opt not to reveal certain details, it is often because they wish to keep critical facts confidential. He explained that any disclosure of specifics could potentially compromise the investigation; for example, if a suspect were to learn of any evidence or clues while the case is still active, their narrative could shift, or vital evidence could be destroyed.
“A lot of times, it’s a smart, investigative move to limit information that’s going out,” Day stated. “A district attorney has to balance the obligation to keep the community informed with the necessity of preserving the investigation’s integrity.”
Despite the frustration that such silence may cause among the public, Day argues that a lengthy investigation does not necessarily indicate incompetence. He explained that many factors could contribute to the lack of arrests, such as ongoing forensic testing or the continued collection of evidence. He indicated that it is essential for investigators to take their time and compile a strong case rather than rush to make arrests.

“When the family stays silent, it signals that they may be cooperating with investigators, which can be a good sign,” he explained. He contrasted the current case with previous investigations where families were vocal about their frustration, noting that such circumstances are often a prosecutor’s worst nightmare.
Brooke Hanlon was discovered by her husband, Joseph “Conor” Hanlon, who called emergency services in a panic, describing the horrifying scene and was directed on how to perform CPR until help arrived. The Morris County Medical Examiner later confirmed that she died from multiple stab wounds and classified her death as a homicide.
The couple, who moved to Chester after spending a decade in Boston, had been married since 2021 and welcomed their daughter, Avery, in 2025. Avery celebrated her first birthday in July, just a month after Hanlon’s untimely death.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Conor Hanlon reportedly returned to their home in early August after being largely absent. Eyewitnesses noted that he had resumed household duties, including yard work, around this time. This reappearance followed a period where he had chosen to stay away from the property as the investigation unfolded.
