This quarter-acre lot, established through the collaboration of rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and actress Bette Midler, serves as more than just a garden; it is a vibrant hub for community engagement and sustainability.
The garden was reborn in 2007 when Jackson partnered with Midler and her New York Restoration Project (NYRP) to transform a neglected area once called the Baisley Park Community Garden. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jackson reflected on how his involvement began with an NYRP fundraiser where he was moved to bid on ten cherry trees. This initial act of generosity inspired him to invest further in his community.
Jackson’s drive was further propelled by his desire to improve local green spaces. He explained, “When I realised what they did, I was like, ‘Yo, I want to do that in my neighbourhood.’” His commitment was backed financially through his G-Unity Foundation, which has supported various community initiatives. Unique blue funnels, towering ten feet high, serve a dual purpose: they function as a rainwater catchment system while providing shade and a play area for children.
The garden contains 30 raised garden beds well-stocked with a diverse selection of fruit trees, including apples, peaches, plums, cherries, and nectarines. These raised beds are deliberately designed to be accessible, allowing participation from people of all ages, from young children to elderly residents. In a recent update, the garden saw enhancements in 2020, such as the installation of a solar-powered water pump and new garden beds, funded by a grant from The Knight Foundation and Hood’s creative input.
