Jesse Metcalfe has recently provided an update regarding the much-anticipated sequel to the 2006 teen comedy *John Tucker Must Die*. The actor expressed his feelings about the project after fellow cast member Arielle Kebbel disclosed that the sequel is currently in limbo and “on pause”.

At a New York Fashion Week event held at the ModernHaus SoHo, Metcalfe shared insights with PEOPLE about the sequel’s status. He mentioned, “There is a sequel script over at 20th Century Fox that Arielle was attempting to spearhead.” Despite this positive news, he acknowledged a decline in the project’s momentum. “It seems to have lost a little momentum, but I like the script,” he stated, indicating his belief that there is still interest in revisiting the story. However, he noted, “I don’t necessarily know if it’s going to get over the finish line or not, and I’m not really losing any sleep over it, but it would certainly be fun to participate in that.”
The original film, which was well-received when it premiered, featured Metcalfe alongside Kebbel, Ashanti, and Sophia Bush. The plot revolves around a group of women who unite to take revenge on the character portrayed by Metcalfe after he breaks their hearts. Kebbel previously confirmed in 2024 that efforts were underway to create a sequel, stating that the script included all of the original cast members.
The excitement surrounding the sequel, however, has been dampened by some setbacks. In February 2026, Kebbel elaborated on the challenges faced in moving forward with the project. After the strike, plans to advance with casting and production were halted as the studio’s priorities shifted.
Yet, Kebbel remains optimistic about the sequel, stating, “It got ‘shelved,’ which is not a permanent thing, but it is not currently active. I have faith, you know? The moment will come. But it’s on pause for now.” This uncertainty has led to speculation among fans about the continuation of the beloved narrative, leaving many eager for further updates.
At the New York event, Metcalfe also reflected on why there is such a strong desire for a sequel, noting the growing trend of nostalgia surrounding early 2000s media. “Well, the Y2K sort of nostalgia moment that we’re in, you can’t really turn your back on it. It’s pretty powerful,” he stated, emphasising the public’s fondness for revisiting the stories and characters from their younger years. He suggested that this current cultural phenomenon could easily reignite interest in a project like *John Tucker Must Die*.
While it remains unclear when, or if, the sequel will move forward, both Metcalfe and Kebbel’s comments show that there is still hope for a return to the world of John Tucker. With a solid script in place and the original cast’s willingness to return, the foundation for a sequel appears to be firmly established, provided the studio decides to pursue it.
