Rocky, a once-forgotten husky, has undergone a remarkable transformation after being rescued from a life of neglect in a Texas backyard. Years of being left without proper care took a toll on his health and wellbeing, but thanks to the dedicated efforts of Mutts N Such Rescue and the Best Friends Animal Society, he has found a new lease on life.
The plight of Rocky began when his original owner passed away, leaving him confined to a yard where he was deprived of the care and love he desperately needed. Over time, Rocky’s health deteriorated significantly; he developed severe issues including mange, flea allergy dermatitis, intestinal parasites, and even heartworm. By the time Mutts N Such Rescue learned of his situation, Rocky was not only physically unwell but also emotionally starved for affection.

Despite the challenges Rocky presented, Mutts N Such Rescue was determined to assist him. The organisation quickly prioritised finding him a foster home to help expedite his recovery. They were able to take advantage of a new program initiated by Best Friends Animal Society known as the Foster Forward Challenge. This initiative allowed them to broaden their foster network and enabled the swift finding of an emergency foster home for Rocky, ensuring he received essential medical attention.
Heather Cardenas, president of Mutts N Such Rescue, expressed the significance of the foster challenge for not only Rocky but the organisation as a whole. “It allowed us to bring in urgent, at-risk cats and dogs from shelters across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex,” she noted, adding that it also attracted new volunteers eager to contribute, even if only on a short-term basis. Many of these volunteers have since gone on to become foster parents themselves.
The individual who answered the call to foster Rocky was Ashley Buchart from Fort Worth, Texas. She offered her apartment as a safe haven for the beleaguered husky, quickly taking him to pet stores to gather the necessary supplies to aid in his recovery. Initially, Buchart intended to foster Rocky temporarily to help him regain his strength and health, but as time passed, she realised how special the dog truly was.
“I fell in love with him,” Buchart said, adding that she was enchanted by Rocky’s good-natured personality and intelligence despite his traumatic past. Her heart was set on providing him with the loving home he deserved, and ultimately, she decided to adopt him.
Two months after Rocky entered Buchart’s home as a foster dog, the benefits of his new environment became astonishingly apparent. Buchart described the profound change in Rocky: “The difference is night and day.” Initially, he was underweight and struggling with serious health conditions, but with care and attention, Rocky began to thrive.
Buchart recounted how Rocky’s fur had regrown, all intestinal parasites had been cleared, and he was progressing through a slow but steady heartworm treatment. “He’s happy and bouncy — a totally different dog than he was two months ago,” she remarked, highlighting the positive impact of nurturing care and love.
With his newfound wellbeing, Rocky has started to enjoy activities he had long been deprived of. Recently, Buchart took him on an adventure to a cabin near a body of water, where he discovered a love for hiking, swimming, and kayaking. The joy evident in Rocky’s behaviour speaks volumes about the power of rescue and foster care.
The story of Rocky serves as a testament to the profound impact that fostering can have on rescue animals, particularly those who have faced neglect and hardship. His journey emphasises the need for awareness about the importance of fostering and the difference a loving home can make in the lives of animals in need.
As Rocky continues to enjoy his new life, his supporters hope his story inspires others to consider fostering pets and extending a chance at life and happiness to those who have been overlooked.
