A historic building that has served various purposes over the years has recently changed hands in Perrysburg, Ohio. The Old Wood County Jail, established in 1847, has been a lasting fixture of the community, and its recent sale marks a significant chapter in its storied history.

The Old Wood County Jail was initially constructed for a modest sum of £1,250 and functioned as the local detention centre until 1870. After more than a century, the property has sold for £400,000, a testament to its enduring legacy and the interest it continues to generate. The property has been treasured by one family since 1924, playing a central role in their lineage.
Caroline Hoffmann, who represented the property as a listing agent with The Danberry Co., shared her excitement over the sale. Hoffmann, who has lived in the jail house with her mother until recently relocating to a property nearby, expressed her delight that the new owners plan to maintain the residence as a private home. She stated her hope that they will honour the building’s unique history while making necessary renovations.
The property underwent significant changes in 1957, when it was converted into a private home. Despite these alterations, many original features remain intact, particularly the six jail cells that now form part of the dining room area. Hoffmann noted that these historical elements will be preserved, adding character and authenticity to the home.
Delving into the history of the building, Hoffmann revealed that her great-grandfather was the first to purchase the jail in 1924. Subsequent generations have undertaken various updates and, notably, worked towards its recognition in the National Register of Historic Places. In the years leading up to 2011, the Old Wood County Jail served as a multi-family dwelling with three separate one-bedroom apartments. However, it transitioned to a single-family residence shortly thereafter.
Hoffmann conveyed her gratitude that the new owners intend to continue using the property in a similar capacity, describing it as a vital piece of Perrysburg’s living history. The transition from a jailhouse to a home reflects the adaptability and resilience of the building, which remains deeply embedded in the community’s narrative.
The property features a spacious three-bedroom layout with three bathrooms, encompassing 2,960 square feet. Its prime location in downtown Perrysburg adds to its appeal, combining historical significance with modern convenience.
Describing the jail’s original architecture, the property listing notes that it was built more like a fortress than a traditional civic structure. This design not only contributes to the home’s charm but also effectively fulfilled its purpose during its time as a jail. The building is characterised by massive stone walls, hand-hewn black walnut beams, and an iron cell door that weighs nearly 113 kilograms, all of which served to ensure the security of its inmates.

According to Hoffmann, one particular prisoner attempted to flee but was thwarted by the quick actions of the sheriff’s wife, who cleverly secured the escapee back within the jail’s confines.
