Talia Casares, a sixth-grade teacher at Moroni Elementary School in Sanpete County, has passed away unexpectedly, just weeks after being recognised as Utah’s Teacher of the Year for 2027. Her recent accolade brought with it a $10,000 prize and the promise of a place in a national competition against other state teachers of the year next year.

The North Sanpete School District announced the news of her untimely death on social media, expressing their deep sorrow over the loss of an educator who meant so much to her students and colleagues. In their heartfelt statement, district officials highlighted her ability to make pupils feel “seen, valued, and capable.”
Casares was described as an exemplary teacher, deeply committed to her students’ well-being and education. “Her love for her students, passion for learning, and joy in teaching were evident in everything she did,” the district’s post conveyed. Just days before her passing on September 14, Casares was honoured at a Teacher of the Year Banquet held in Salt Lake City. Originally from Mexico City, Casares earned her Master of Arts in Spanish Pedagogy from Brigham Young University in Utah County. In 2025, she was awarded the Utah Coalition for Educational Technology Innovative Teacher Award, which further underscored her commitment to innovative teaching practices.
Following her recent accolade, Casares spoke about the significance of the award for her and her family, expressing appreciation for her colleagues at Moroni Elementary. “I don’t think this is just for me — I think this belongs to every teacher,” she remarked, acknowledging the unseen hard work and dedication of educators everywhere.
In light of her passing, the school district has arranged for grief counselling services to support both students and staff affected by this tragic loss. Social workers and counsellors are available at Moroni Elementary School, as well as neighbouring middle and high schools, to help the community cope with their grief.
