However, experts urge caution in interpreting these figures. Although the increase is encouraging, the eastern monarch population still remains significantly below historical levels. In the late 1990s, colonies occupied nearly 45 acres, and various factors, including habitat loss, decreased milkweed availability, pesticide use, and the impacts of climate change, have contributed to a substantial decline in numbers over recent decades. In recognition of these challenges, the International Union for Conservation of Nature declared the monarch butterfly as endangered in 2022. Additionally, there have been proposals to list this endangered species as threatened under the Endangered Species Act by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
