In a remarkable turn of events, a groom’s wedding day was nearly disrupted by a theft, only for his groomsmen—many of whom were law enforcement officers—to step in and save the day. Alex Morris and his fiancée Kathryn were set to exchange vows at Worthington Park in Quilcene, Washington, on 15 August, when Morris was faced with an unexpected crisis just hours before the ceremony.

Three hours prior to the nuptials, Morris discovered that several important items for the ceremony had gone missing. Trying to shield his bride from any unnecessary stress, he opted to keep the situation under wraps. “I told all of the groomsmen… ‘Do not let Kathryn know about this. She cannot know. We’ll get this all taken care of,'” he recounted later.

The couple had booked the venue from 14 to 16 August, and on the day of the wedding, the preparations were in full swing. During the setup process, Morris received an alarming call from their DJ. The Bluetooth speakers that were crucial for their ceremony had been stolen. Upon further investigation, Morris discovered that numerous items—including drinks and decorations—had also gone missing.
Realising the severity of the situation, Morris enlisted the help of his groomsmen, a number of whom serve in law enforcement. With their knowledge of the local area and experience, he felt confident that they could track down the stolen items. “Knowing that some of my best friends are in law enforcement… I knew that they were going to get it back at some point,” Morris said.
Brandon Przygocki, one of the groomsmen and an undersheriff, took the lead on the investigation while assuring Morris that Kathryn would be kept in the dark about the unfolding drama. Przygocki quickly contacted his supervisor to report the theft and another groomsman began examining the area for any clues that might lead them to the thief. The group was soon aided by security footage that showed a suspicious vehicle on the premises during the early hours.
The footage proved critical; it captured a man, later identified as Russell Kullander, wheeling items stolen from the venue in a wheelbarrow. Local law enforcement quickly recognised the vehicle and Kullander was charged with several offences, including theft and criminal trespass.
Deputy Kyle Pernsteiner, who was on duty that day, went to Kullander’s residence and successfully retrieved the stolen items with time to spare before the wedding commenced. The immediate crisis had been averted, much to the relief of Morris and his groomsmen. “The wedding was saved!” Przygocki exclaimed, expressing his pride in being able to assist his friend on such an important day.
The wedding proceeded smoothly, with nearly 300 guests in attendance. The groom, maintaining his composure, encountered Kathryn before the ceremony and, despite her noticing his preoccupied demeanour, he remained tight-lipped about the earlier theft. During their reception dinner, however, the bridesmaids disclosed the earlier events to Kathryn, who was initially taken aback. “Her jaw just dropped to the floor,” Morris recalled. “She was also in shock that we were able to keep it from her, so that way it didn’t worry her at all throughout the day.”
Once the day’s festivities began without incident, Kathryn reflected on the events and expressed profound gratitude towards the local law enforcement who stepped in to assist. This unexpected story has now become a cherished memory for the newlyweds.
Przygocki summed it up succinctly: “It’s just one of those things, it was kind of surreal. Like, being there as a groomsman, but also as a law enforcement officer.” This incident serves as a testament to the resourcefulness and commitment of friends and law enforcement, ensuring that love and joy ultimately triumphed on what was meant to be a day of celebration.
The extraordinary story of Alex and Kathryn Morris, with its unexpected twists, has captured attention and serves as a reminder of the importance of friendship and support, especially during life’s pivotal moments. The couple can now look back at their wedding day as not only a celebration of their love but also a tale of how quickly a crisis can turn into a cherished memory.
