On September 6, Matthews, 42, arrived in Chicago to spend time with her grandmother. She parked her Chrysler 300 outside her family’s home in Humboldt Park, opting to leave her son’s remains in the car as her grandmother was uncomfortable with having them indoors. Sadly, upon awakening the following morning, Matthews discovered that her car was missing, along with its precious contents.

“I woke up on September 8 to find my car stolen, and my heart sank,” Matthews shared in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. The ashes of her son, who died in a tragic accident on August 9, were stored in the trunk. Following the heartbreaking discovery, Matthews wasted no time in contacting the Chicago Police Department to report the theft.

The police confirmed that they were investigating the incident, but Matthews knew that time was of the essence. Feeling desperate, she turned to TikTok, hoping to reach a wider audience. Her emotional appeal went viral, amassing nearly 200,000 views and drawing supportive comments from the online community. In her video, Matthews pleaded, “I want my baby back. I need my baby back. I want my baby back right now.”
The power of social media shone through when, just a day later, Matthews received the news she had been hoping for. Someone had left her son’s ashes on the family’s porch, accompanied by other keepsakes. While the recovery of the ashes brought immense relief, Matthews noted that her car had not been returned. Nevertheless, she expressed her gratitude for the moral compass displayed by the unknown individual who returned her son’s remains.
“There really is some morality left in this world,” she remarked, reflecting on the kindness shown by the person who took the time to return such an important part of her life. Matthews voiced her overwhelming sense of relief upon receiving her son’s ashes, asserting, “I knew he was going to come back. I’m just glad he did.”
The story highlights the growing role of social media platforms in community support and engagement. Matthews’ experience serves as a poignant reminder of the connections that can be fostered in moments of adversity. The overwhelming response from viewers on social media not only helped spread her message but also fostered a sense of hope and solidarity among users who offered condolences and supportive messages during her time of need.
With her son’s ashes safely returned, Matthews now faces the next steps in her journey of grief and healing. While her car remains missing, the goodwill shown by strangers has undoubtedly provided a sense of comfort as she navigates the aftermath of her son’s untimely passing.
In light of this incident, action has been called for regarding community safety and vehicle theft in the area. As Matthews’ story gains traction, it may serve as a catalyst for local authorities and neighbourhood groups to coordinate efforts aimed at lowering crime rates and enhancing the sense of security for residents.
As the days pass, Matthews continues to spread awareness regarding the value of compassion and the impact of collective action. By sharing her experience, she hopes to inspire others to come together in times of crisis, reminding them that, in moments of despair, love and kindness can prevail.
