A mother in Arizona displayed remarkable bravery during a recent incident when a coyote attacked her young daughter, highlighting the risks posed by wildlife in suburban areas. Brittany Cardinal, a resident of Surprise, Arizona, faced a harrowing situation on Sunday, 6 September, while she and her four-year-old daughter were outside enjoying a windy day, flying kites.

The tranquil afternoon turned alarming when Cardinal heard her daughter’s screams. She turned to see a coyote nipping at the child. Cardinal immediately reacted, picking up her daughter and attempting to scare the animal away by yelling at it. However, her efforts were in vain as the coyote persisted in its attack, even as she tried to intervene.
Cardinal recounted her experience in a phone interview, expressing the panic and instinctive need to protect her child. “I picked her up and then I started yelling at it, thinking, of course it’s going to go away, and then it didn’t,” she said. Her efforts escalated as she resorted to taking off her flip-flop and trying to swat at the animal to make it back off. Unfortunately, this action only provoked the coyote further, culminating in a struggle that caused Cardinal to fall.
Following the incident, she sustained significant facial injuries, which required medical attention. Pictures shared by Cardinal after her visit to the hospital displayed stitches around her mouth and various cuts and bruises on her face. “I always hear people say, ‘You don’t feel the pain when, like, trauma like that happens,’ and I mean, I really didn’t feel any pain. I just felt like the pressure of it,” she reflected on her ordeal.
Once she was able to escape the frightening encounter, Cardinal returned home with her daughter to call for help. Local wildlife officials responded by removing several coyotes from the vicinity and conducting tests to determine if they carried rabies. The Arizona Game and Fish Department has been involved in investigating the incident further.
According to reports from AZ Family, Alex Flickinger, a representative of the Arizona Game and Fish Department, confirmed that Cardinal followed appropriate procedures during the coyote attack. He emphasised the importance of responding assertively to such situations. “You fight back, you yell at the animal, be loud with it, throw rocks, whatever you have to do to get that animal to just run off,” Flickinger instructed.
Despite the traumatic experience, Cardinal’s instinctive response to protect her child was evident. “There was no hesitation at all. I don’t even think I thought about anything,” she explained. Her actions underline a fierce maternal instinct that many parents can relate to when faced with threats to their children.
In light of this incident, local authorities have urged residents to take precautions against wildlife encounters. It is recommended that families dispose of food and waste properly to avoid attracting animals like coyotes.
