At Least 20 Dead and 5 Missing After Cargo Ship Catches Fire While Being Docked for Repairs

A tragic fire incident involving a cargo ship took place at Qingdao Port in eastern China’s Shandong Province on Thursday, 10 September, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 individuals, as confirmed by state media. The blaze erupted during maintenance work on the vessel, which was docked at a facility managed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

Initial reports indicate that approximately 42 crew members were on board the ship when the fire broke out around 11:15 a.m. local time. The cause of the fire remains unclear, and investigations are underway to determine what led to the incident.

Emergency services, including fire and rescue teams, were quickly dispatched to the scene, where they engaged in extensive search and rescue operations. According to reports, twelve people were successfully evacuated from the burning ship. Additionally, five injured individuals were transported to a local hospital and are currently reported to be in stable condition.

The fire took several hours to bring under control, finally quelled around 2:30 p.m. While initial accounts stated that 25 crew members were missing, updates later revealed that tragically around 20 of those missing were found deceased on the vessel, with five individuals still unaccounted for.

Images circulated by state media depicted the cargo ship bearing a dark blue stripe above a red one, with the name “Ocean Melody” emblazoned across its hull. The ship operates under a Liberian flag, according to maritime tracking data.

In response to the calamity, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged intensified rescue efforts for the missing individuals and emphasised the necessity of providing support for the victims’ families. He also called for officials to thoroughly investigate the causes of the fire and to implement measures to enhance fire safety protocols, thereby reducing the risk of future incidents.

Premier Li Qiang echoed these sentiments, advocating for the urgent rescue of any individuals still trapped and stressing the importance of assisting those injured in the blaze. He also highlighted the need for actions to prevent secondary disasters as a result of the fire.

In addition, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management, alongside local authorities in Shandong, has mobilised a significant number of personnel and resources to support on-site operations, demonstrating the government’s commitment to managing the crisis effectively.

This incident raises broader questions about safety standards in the maritime industry, especially regarding maintenance work. Investigations are expected to scrutinise not only the direct causes of the fire but also compliance with safety regulations that could help prevent such tragedies in the future.
