Clementon Park and Splash World, a historic amusement park in New Jersey, has announced an impending permanent closure, bringing an end to its 119-year legacy. The park, located in Camden County, will conclude operations following the 2026 season, a decision that has resonated deeply with generations of families who have cherished its attractions.

Established in 1907 by Theodore Gibbs and his sons, Clementon Park was originally designed as a “trolley park,” created to attract visitors at the end of a transit line. It originally served as a local entertainment hub, offering accessible leisure activities for the community. Over the years, the park has seen its share of challenges, including a devastating fire in 1931 that nearly destroyed the facility. Remarkably, it persevered, continuing to operate under the Gibbs family’s stewardship until 1977.

In a heartfelt message posted on their website, the current owners expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to manage the park and the emotional connection it has fostered within the community. “It has been a privilege to care for a place that has meant so much to generations of families,” the statement read. They expressed hope for finding a buyer who would appreciate the park’s historical significance and work to preserve its legacy.

The park spans 52 acres and boasts an array of attractions, including the family-friendly Dragon Coaster, the log flume ride King Neptune’s Revenge, and the thrilling Hellcat wooden roller coaster. These rides have brought joy to countless visitors, making the announcement of the park’s closing all the more poignant for many.
Ownership of the park transferred to Chicago-based IB Parks & Entertainment in 2021 after it was sold at foreclosure for $2.37 million. Prior to this acquisition, the park had experienced two years of inactivity following a closure in 2019, which occurred after the previous owners defaulted on loans. Since then, IB Parks & Entertainment attempted to revitalize the park, but ultimately decided to cease operations after the 2026 season.
Adding to the park’s charm was a significant renovation in 1993, during which approximately $5 million was invested to improve the grounds and expand the water park offerings. The renovations introduced a range of features, such as multiple water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and the expansive 13,000-square-foot Aquatic Paradise sprayground, enhancing the park’s appeal to visitors of all ages.
In addition to Clementon Park and Splash World, IB Parks & Entertainment operates several other attractions, including Indiana Beach Amusement & Water Park in Monticello, Indiana, and Sahara Sam’s water park in West Berlin, New Jersey. Recently, the company announced plans to take over operations of Lake Winnepesaukah amusement and water park in Lakeview, Georgia, showcasing their ongoing commitment to the amusement park industry.
However, the current management cited declining attendance and revenue as significant factors leading to the decision to close Clementon Park and Splash World. The success of an amusement park hinges on visitor numbers, and in recent years, the park has struggled to attract the crowds necessary for sustainable growth.
As the final season approaches, many community members and long-time visitors are expected to pay tribute to the park that has been a beloved part of their lives. The rich history of Clementon Park and Splash World will undoubtedly be remembered by those who have enjoyed its rides and attractions through the decades.
The announcement highlights the importance of preserving such cultural landmarks and the role they play within the communities they serve. Future details concerning the sale of the property are anticipated, raising hopes amongst those who wish to see the park continue its legacy for future generations.
