Caroline and Raymond Harrington, a couple aged just 32, are embarking on their latest home-building adventure, marking their third property construction together in the span of five years. Another essential tip she shares is the importance of decluttering before moving. “If you haven’t used it, just get rid of it,” she stresses, recalling her struggle to part with an expensive coffee pot that had not seen any use for eight years. The sentiment encapsulates her approach to simplifying life, particularly during the upheaval of relocating.

Currently residing in a guest house, the couple plans to invest more effort into their living space than they have in the past. They envision transforming the guest house into a man cave while enhancing the landscaping of their front yard. In this build, Caroline insists on addressing her “non-negotiables,” such as having a laundry room adjacent to the master bedroom, which will simplify day-to-day life.

Caroline acknowledges the unique position they find themselves in, noting that few at their age can say they’ve constructed three homes. “If it takes us five years to build this dream, so be it,” she asserts. “We want to make sure it’s exactly what we want, and we also need to be financially sensible.” The couple is prepared to remain in the guest house for as long as necessary, even if that means living there for an extended period due to rising costs.
