Luca Opperman, a 20-year-old college student from California, is being hailed as a local hero following his brave intervention during a chaotic incident at an In-N-Out Burger in Lake Elsinore. The event, which unfolded in the early hours of 2nd September, saw Opperman defending employees of the popular fast-food chain against a woman allegedly threatening them with a large wooden stick.

The dramatic episode was captured on video by a bystander, who later shared the footage on Instagram. In the clip, a woman can be seen brandishing a stick roughly the size of a baseball bat, yelling at staff and chasing them into a back room. As Opperman was collecting his order at the drive-through window, he heard an alarming noise that piqued his curiosity.

“I look up and just see this lady, she has this baseball bat-sized stick, basically like a tree branch, and she’s overhead smashing it on top of a counter,” he recounted in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Opperman sprang into action, leaping through the drive-through window and grabbing the first item he could find—a spatula.

Reflecting on the rapid sequence of events, he noted, “Thinking about it now, I probably would have been better off with a fryer basket, but it happened so fast.” The young man shouted at the woman to leave the premises, but she reportedly made her way into the kitchen, where more staff were gathered.

A bystander who witnessed Opperman’s heroic act described him as moving with impressive agility, akin to an action hero. “He jumps through the window like he’s Spider-Man or pulls off a Jackie Chan move,” the witness shared in her video, portraying Opperman as a figure who managed to confront the chaotic situation with remarkable resolve.

At approximately 12:45 a.m., law enforcement from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene. According to Lieutenant Deirdre Vickers, deputies reported that a “good Samaritan” had successfully disarmed the woman, identified as 53-year-old Antonieta Sanchez from Redlands, California. Sanchez was detained without further incident, and no injuries were reported. She faces charges of felony vandalism and brandishing a weapon.

Opperman, who has a background as a gymnast, rugby player, and parkour instructor, explained his motivations for intervening. “I know In-N-Out employees get paid decent, but they don’t get paid well enough to get attacked by a crazy lady with a stick,” he stated, emphasising his desire to protect those he felt needed assistance. He recognised that the situation had the potential to turn violent. “If I didn’t step in, I knew that somebody could have gotten hurt,” he added.

The incident has resonated on social media, with many users echoing sentiments of admiration for Opperman’s composed bravery. The bystander’s video was captioned “Small town hero alert,” showcasing the significant public appreciation for his actions. In-N-Out’s Chief Operating Officer, Denny Warnick, also expressed gratitude, praising Opperman’s quick thinking and selflessness.

Despite receiving widespread acclaim, Opperman remains modest about his role in the event. “Everything I’ve read has been positive, but I feel like what I did was more being in the right place at the right time,” he confessed.
