Piper Phillips, an emerging music artist, is keen to share the often unspoken realities of pursuing a career in the music industry, particularly regarding the financial implications. Having recently made her debut on “Good Day New York,” her experience highlights the significant costs associated with just a brief television appearance.

The 26-year-old’s television moment was brief but costly. Phillips managed to perform her single “Talk to Me” in just over six minutes, yet her preparations incurred an expense of approximately £2,385. This figure encompassed a variety of costs including studio rehearsals, equipment rentals, and payments for her accompanying band. Interestingly, her father, who travelled from Chicago to play drums for her, did not charge her for his time, neutralising one of the higher expenses.

Reflecting on the experience, Phillips stated that she received the opportunity following a viral video that featured her in a rather unusual situation – dealing with a tick on her neck just before a performance. This incident attracted the attention of a producer from “Good Day New York,” who subsequently invited her to the show after discovering her music through social media.
Phillips moved to New York City four years ago, initially pursuing a career in marketing. However, her passion for music ultimately led her to embark on a full-time career in the entertainment industry. She emphasises the duality of her identity as both an artist and an entrepreneur, recognising the need to leverage her marketing background to build her personal brand as a musician.
“My marketing career has funded my music,” she explains. With savings from her previous job, she intends to reinvest in her music career while being judicious about her expenditures moving forward. As an independent artist without a record label, every decision regarding investment becomes critical. “The music business can be very expensive,” she asserts, now understanding the extent of the financial commitment required.
Despite the initial financial outlay, Phillips remains hopeful about the potential returns on her investment. Although her recent appearance did not yield immediate cash gains, it opened the door to numerous opportunities. Following the show, she experienced a surge in her online presence, gaining over 10,000 new followers on social media platforms and receiving multiple performance offers from New York City venues.
Phillips points out that it can take time for artists in the industry to see financial returns, especially when traditional sales metrics are less applicable. “In music, you don’t track sales in the same way; success often appears as social media traction, streaming, and live performances,” she reflects. Moreover, she believes understanding these dynamics is crucial for independent artists navigating the industry without the safety net of major label backing.
Looking forward, Phillips harbours aspirations of signing with a record label in the future. Her outlook, however, is pragmatic; she knows that having some existing traction will enable her to negotiate deals more favourably. “It’s about positioning myself to have leverage when the time comes,” she states.
In her quest to share her journey authentically, Phillips aims to demystify the financial realities of pursuing a music career, especially for other aspiring artists. “Talking about money is crucial,” she says. “It fosters realistic expectations. While being on TV might seem glamorous, it’s essential to discuss the associated costs and the struggles involved.”
Phillips, who began her musical journey playing in a cover band with her father, continues to cultivate her artistry while adjusting her strategies in the ever-evolving music landscape. She suggests that social media is an invaluable asset for independent artists today. “It enables you to maximize events and strategic appearances, making every investment worthwhile,” she adds.
As Piper Phillips forges ahead, she demonstrates that the path to success in the entertainment industry is fraught with challenges, yet persistent effort and strategic choices can turn obstacles into opportunities. Whether in her music or marketing initiatives, the journey is as vital as the destination, a sentiment she actively shares with her growing audience online.
