Neighbor Calls 911 After Hearing Banging in a Nearby House, Then Police Arrive and Face a Real-Life ‘Cat Burglar’

In a peculiar incident in Kirkland, Washington, local authorities responded to a reported burglary only to discover a bobcat inside the home. The unexpected visitor was likely attracted by the homeowner’s cat, eventually gaining entry through an open window.

The incident unfolded in the Moss Bay neighbourhood of Kirkland, a suburban area located about 13 miles from Seattle. Concerned by sounds of banging coming from within the residence, the homeowner made a swift decision to alert the police, suspecting an intrusion. However, upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered a different kind of intruder altogether.

As the officers entered the home, they spotted the bobcat perched at the top of the staircase. The Kirkland Police Department later communicated via social media that it appeared the animal had climbed a nearby tree and jumped through an open window to get inside. Fortunately, the resident’s cat was discovered unharmed amid the chaos.

The police quickly realised the situation required specialist handling. To ensure the safety of both the bobcat and the home’s occupants, officers employed a drone to monitor the animal’s movements from a secure distance. Once they had confirmed the bobcat’s location, the police managed to move it into an empty room to contain it until wildlife officials arrived.

Officials from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) were dispatched to the scene. Upon their arrival, they sedated the bobcat and prepared it for relocation. Footage captured during the incident revealed the bobcat hissing in agitation while standing defiantly atop the staircase, adding a sense of drama to the unusual turn of events.

After being safely captured, the bobcat was released into a more suitable environment near Forbes Creek, an area that serves as a natural habitat for these animals. Remarkably, no injuries were reported—neither to the human residents nor the curious feline.

Bobcats are native to Washington and can often be spotted in suburban environments, although sightings are comparatively rare due to their elusive nature. According to information from the WDFW, adult male bobcats typically weigh between 20 and 30 pounds and measure around three feet in length, while their female counterparts are generally smaller.

In light of this incident, the Kirkland Police Department provided guidance to residents on how to handle potential encounters with bobcats. They advised keeping a safe distance should one come across the animal and not to feed or approach it. Additionally, the department recommended pet owners keep their animals indoors during dawn and dusk, when bobcats are most active, and to secure small livestock and poultry to prevent unintended encounters.

In the unlikely event of a bobcat making its way into a home, authorities urged residents to move people and pets away from the area and to call emergency services. This incident was a reminder that wildlife can occasionally venture into urban spaces, prompting communities to stay vigilant and informed about how to coexist with local fauna.
