Both were accomplished tennis players in their own right, and their influence on Ben’s journey is profound. Ben, born on October 9, 2002, grew up in a household steeped in tennis tradition. His father, Bryan Shelton, reached the peak of his career as a top 60 singles player in the 1990s and participated in several Grand Slam events, including Wimbledon and the US Open. His mother, Lisa, while not as well-known as her husband, also made her mark on the junior tennis circuit. The couple married in October 1999 and welcomed their first child, Emma, in March 2001.

Tennis was not initially a passion for Ben, who preferred playing American football as a quarterback during his early years. “This was the same kid who said that ‘tennis will not be my sport’ when he was younger,” Bryan recalled. It was only when he turned 11 that Ben began to embrace the sport, a development that took both parents by surprise. They maintained a hands-off approach, allowing him to grow into the game organically, free from the pressure sometimes exerted by family expectations.

Bryan’s own tennis background undoubtedly shaped Ben’s approach to the sport. During a conversation with The New York Times in August 2022, Bryan reflected on his son’s swift ascent in tennis. “It took me a long time to get to where he’s at, and he started later than I did,” he explained. Ben’s development has been rapid, with his accomplishments ranking alongside those of many young competitors who begin training from a much earlier age.

Bryan Shelton’s career as a professional tennis player spanned nine years on the ATP Tour before his retirement in 1997. He holds two singles titles and has competed in multiple Grand Slam tournaments. Among his notable achievements, he reached the finals of the French Open in mixed doubles in 1993. His collegiate career as an All-American at Georgia Tech further solidified his standing in the sport, leading to his eventual induction into multiple Athletic Halls of Fame.

Transitioning from player to coach, Bryan took on a significant role within collegiate tennis. After a successful tenure at Georgia Tech, he became the head coach at the University of Florida in June 2012. It was here that he coached Ben when he was a student-athlete for the Florida Gators, helping him secure a national title. Their collaboration has proven impactful, as Ben acknowledges the unique advantage he has by having his father as a coach.

Though Bryan stepped back from collegiate coaching in June 2023, he has dedicated himself to coaching Ben full-time. Ben recently paid tribute to his father, recognising not only his achievements in tennis but also the character he instilled in those he coached. In an Instagram post, he expressed gratitude for his father’s influence, and hinted at their exciting future together on the professional circuit.

Ben’s mother, Lisa, also has roots in tennis. While she did not reach the same professional heights as Bryan, she was a promising junior player. Currently, she balances her life as a realtor with her role as a supportive figure in her children’s tennis careers. Interestingly, Lisa is the sister of the late Todd Witsken, a former world No. 4 doubles player, which adds another layer to the Shelton family’s deep ties to the sport.

Emma, the couple’s eldest child, has also pursued tennis, playing for the University of Florida after initially signing with South Carolina. Recently graduated with a degree in business administration and finance, she is navigating her own professional journey at Morgan Stanley. In July 2025, Emma was visibly supportive at Wimbledon, and Ben publicly advocated for her to receive time off from work to extend her stay during the tournament, showcasing the closeness of their family bond.
