**University Student’s Ovarian Tumour Journey Highlights Medical Oversights**

A significant health scare has changed the life of Elizabeth Langlais, a 19-year-old college student, who discovered a large ovarian tumour after a series of misdiagnoses. Initially dismissed as constipation by medical professionals, Elizabeth’s ongoing pain ultimately led to the shocking diagnosis and subsequent surgery.
In May 2026, Langlais began experiencing intense discomfort in her lower abdomen, which made daily activities challenging. Despite the severity of her pain, she was advised to visit the hospital only to be told that her symptoms were likely due to constipation. “I was adamant that it was my appendix,” she recalled. Upon examination, doctors concurred with her initial assessment and sent her home with laxative treatment to manage what they believed was a temporary issue.

However, the treatment did little to alleviate her symptoms, and Elizabeth’s bloating and discomfort persisted. After returning home to Rhode Island in June for a routine check-up, she reported continuous bloating and a hard stomach to her doctor. Her physician expressed concern and ordered another X-ray, which indicated that her issues were more serious than previously thought.
By early July, an ultrasound was conducted which revealed a large mass on her right ovary measuring over 20 centimetres. Although doctors were hopeful that the tumour was not cancerous due to Elizabeth’s age, they advised that it was causing compression on her colon, leading to her gastrointestinal distress. “The pain I was having was directly related to this mass,” she explained.
Accepting that surgery was necessary, Elizabeth prepared for the operation. What was initially planned as a standard procedure to remove her right ovary soon turned more complex. During the surgery, it was discovered that a sizeable cystic tumour, measuring 25 centimetres, was located on her left ovary, accompanied by multiple solid masses on her right. “They had to change the surgical approach due to the size and nature of the tumours,” she recounted.
The surgical team successfully removed the cystic tumour, but tests revealed that it was borderline, indicating a high likelihood of recurrence and the potential for cancer. “They informed me that there’s an 80% chance it could come back. While I don’t have cancer for now, the risk looms over my future,” she said. This unsettling information meant that Elizabeth now faced the prospect of fertility preservation and possibly IVF treatments, as doctors advised her to consider freezing her eggs.
Shocked by the rapid turn of events, Elizabeth reflected on her situation. “It was overwhelming to confront these realities at just 19 years old,” she shared. “You go to sleep preparing to lose one ovary and wake up facing the possibility of infertility.”
Despite her circumstances, Elizabeth remains hopeful and has been proactive in her recovery. Following a six-day hospital stay, she has recently begun fertility testing, with plans for further hormone treatments ahead. “I try to stay focused on the positives. The worst part is behind me, and I’m gradually regaining normalcy,” she articulated.
Simultaneously, Elizabeth has turned to social media as an outlet and support system. Sharing her journey on TikTok has allowed her to connect with others who have undergone similar experiences. “It feels good to know I’m not alone in this,” she stated. Her resilient attitude has helped her navigate the emotional turmoil, as she strives to maintain a positive outlook despite the uncertainties that lie ahead.
