In a heartbreaking turn of events, the body found in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on 8 August has been identified as 18-year-old Thomas French. The boy’s mother, Ashley Fralick, expressed her profound sorrow, stating, “I go in and out from crying and being happy,” as she grapples with the loss of her son.

Authorities had initially sought assistance from the public to identify the body, which was discovered without any identification or personal belongings. The Myrtle Beach Police Department released a forensic illustration to aid in the identification process. Nearly three weeks later, Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard confirmed the identity of the victim as French, who had recently moved from Florida with aspirations of starting afresh in Boston.
French was reported to be heading to Boston when circumstances led him to Myrtle Beach. Although the cause of his death remains undetermined, officials are continuing their investigation into the incident. A representative from the Myrtle Beach Police indicated that there was currently no evidence suggesting foul play.
The police first called for public assistance on 25 August, stating that the body was found in the 1000 block of Highway 501. Following a thorough search of missing persons databases at local, state, and federal levels, the authorities were able to identify French a day later and promptly notified his next of kin.
Fralick described her son as intelligent and talented, recalling his early ambitions of pursuing a career in politics. “He loved music, he loved to rap, and he loved to draw,” she shared with NBC affiliate WMBF. She mentioned that he had moved to Myrtle Beach around Independence Day and that their last conversation took place on 7 August. “He was really excited,” she recalled, noting that Thomas had enrolled in a six-month programme aimed at helping him join the Job Corps and build a future.
The grieving mother had been tirelessly attempting to reach her son during his last known days, frequently calling his mobile phone only to find it unanswered. Fralick grew increasingly concerned for his wellbeing, leading others to check if the police sketch matched his appearance. The family has yet to uncover the details surrounding Thomas’s untimely demise.
Fralick, who is expecting another child and already has two siblings from Thomas, described the intense blend of emotions she has been facing. “I go in and out from crying and being happy,” she remarked, underscoring the difficulty of coping with such a profound loss amidst her own personal situation.
In the wake of this tragedy, an online fundraiser has been launched to assist the French family with funeral expenses. Thomas’s family has portrayed him as a beloved son and a cherished big brother, stating in the campaign description that his life was unfairly cut short, leaving them with an overwhelming void.
The description further emphasised: “Thomas deserved so much more time. He deserved the chance to grow, experience life, and make memories with the people who loved him.” The fundraising initiative reflects the community’s support for the French family as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
As the situation unfolds, local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Thomas French’s death, seeking to provide answers to a grieving family and community.
