Television presenter Padma Lakshmi has opened up about the conflicting emotions she experiences as her 16-year-old daughter, Krishna, approaches the pivotal stage of her senior year in high school. Lakshmi, who is known for her culinary expertise and hosting talents, discussed her relationship with her daughter and the delicate balance of fostering independence while managing parental concerns.
During a recent interview with PEOPLE, Lakshmi highlighted the independence she has instilled in Krishna, noting that the teenager has been raised to be self-sufficient. “My daughter’s incredibly independent,” Lakshmi remarked. “I’ve raised her to be that way.” As a single mother, Lakshmi took her daughter along to various work engagements, making it a priority for them to share experiences together.
However, Lakshmi also acknowledged the limitations of Krishna’s freedom compared to her own teenage years. “I will say I, at her age, had way more freedom,” she confessed. One significant factor contributing to this difference is transportation; while Lakshmi was driving by the age of 16, Krishna has yet to obtain her driving licence, a situation attributed to growing up in New York City, where opportunities to learn to drive are minimal.
Lakshmi expressed that the transition into greater independence can be challenging, saying, “We talk about children’s growing pains, but I think adults have growing pains too with their children.” She elaborated on the complexities of allowing children to assert their autonomy while also navigating parental instincts to protect them. “It’s part of parenting to let your child grow up, to give them more responsibility in baby steps,” she said.
In an effort to provide Krishna with the freedom she desires while maintaining her own peace of mind, Lakshmi has partnered with Lyft Teen. This service allows teenagers to use ride-sharing with added safety features, including annual background checks for drivers. Lakshmi shared an Instagram post where she prepares coconut chutney for Krishna while monitoring her daughter’s whereabouts through the app. “Having Lyft is a way to give her freedom but give me peace of mind,” Lakshmi noted.
Given their lifestyle in New York City, the mother-daughter duo often utilises public transport; however, Lakshmi appreciates Lyft Teen for its flexibility, particularly during inclement weather or late-night travel. “Especially when it’s later at night, I always want to know where she is,” she said, emphasising how technology has advanced since her own youth.
Lakshmi also mentioned how Krishna’s busy schedule demands efficient travel solutions. The teenager attends vocal lessons, meets with tutors, and navigates the city to connect with friends after school. With preparations for standardized tests and school musical rehearsals also on the horizon, Lakshmi indicated that using Lyft Teen would be a practical option when time is of the essence.
As Krishna nears her senior year, Lakshmi candidly expressed her anxieties regarding her daughter leaving home. “My general anxiety is about her leaving the nest,” Lakshmi shared, recognising the finite time they have together before Krishna embarks on the next chapter of her life. “I can feel the clock ticking,” she admitted.
Despite her worries, Lakshmi is eager to see her daughter flourish. “I want her to thrive. I want her to spread her wings,” she stated, expressing her hopes for their continued closeness as Krishna transitions into adulthood. She described watching her daughter evolve as both astonishing and bittersweet. “Sometimes she goes to her dad’s house, and then she comes back and she’s a new person,” Lakshmi remarked, noting the rapid changes Krishna undergoes.
