In the astronomical community, the status of Pluto continues to be a point of contention, nearly twenty years after it was officially demoted from planet to dwarf planet. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) made this pivotal decision during their 2006 meeting in Prague, a move which incited passionate debate among both astronomers and the general public.

For many, Pluto was an integral part of our solar system, having been classified as the ninth planet since its discovery by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson had been a considerable advocate for Pluto’s demotion prior to the IAU’s landmark decision. In 2001, Tyson sparked backlash when he chose not to list Pluto as one of the solar system’s planets at the opening of the Rose Center for Earth and Space. Instead, he categorised Pluto among the numerous icy bodies found in the Kuiper Belt, leading him to consider Pluto less a member of the planetary family and more a body among its peers.
“Pluto does not have a family except for the icy bodies in the outer solar system,” Tyson remarked in a 2001 interview. He argued that this classification simplified the discussion surrounding planetary status. Tyson elegantly framed the narrative, suggesting that Pluto might transition “from puniest planet to king of the Kuiper Belt,” a statement reflecting his hope that the scientific community would adapt to a more practical definition of planetary classification.
Despite Tyson’s rationalisations, the fallout from the demotion created an unexpected backlash; he mentioned in a 2024 interview that he continues to receive “hate mail” from children who feel let down by the change. Still, some astronomers remained sceptical about the IAU’s decision. Alan Stern, who leads NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto, anticipated that the decision might eventually be overturned, showcasing the divide within the scientific community.
Launched in early 2006, New Horizons continued gathering valuable data about Pluto and the Kuiper Belt regardless of the change in classification. The mission has thus far successfully provided unprecedented insights, including captivating images captured during its flyby of Pluto in 2015. Stern, in a 2018 article, voiced his dissent regarding the IAU’s ruling, suggesting that terminology in science should not be dictated by authoritative vote—especially when varying disciplines utilise terms differently.
Even in astrology, Pluto retains its significance, with astrological charts still including the dwarf planet despite its official demotion. This suggests that Pluto continues to hold a unique place in cultural narratives, influencing those who look to the stars for guidance.
