The sisters grew up steeped in music, with their father encouraging them to pursue their passions while mentoring them in the industry from an early age. “There’s only one thing I can show you because this is what I’ve done since I was five years old,” BG shared during a recent interview. The Womack family boasts a rich tapestry of musical heritage, with both parents forming the group Womack & Womack, and their uncle Bobby Womack leading the family band, the Valentinos.
Despite their familial connections to the music industry, BG, Zeimani, and Kucha faced their own set of challenges and personal losses. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2007, the sisters worked various jobs while honing their craft as singers and songwriters. They began collaborating with well-known artists such as Solange Knowles and Mýa, yet the journey was not without its tribulations. The loss of their father and uncle left an indelible mark on the sisters, forcing them to step back from their musical ambitions for a while.
In a surprising turn of events, their experiences outside music, including running a cleaning business and working for Uber, became essential in funding their artistic aspirations. “Our parents always told us that if you want passion, you’re going to find it in your poverty, so you have to start at the bottom,” BG explained. In 2017, the sisters released their debut single “Darling” as a tribute to their late family members. The subsequent years were riddled with challenges, including those brought on by the pandemic, which delayed further projects. However, they found their footing with the release of their EP, *Legacy*, in 2022, where they paid homage to their grandfather with a rendition of “A Change Is Gonna Come.”
The sisters encountered a stark reality when seeking a record deal. During this process, they faced the discouragement of labels that claimed there was little interest in soul music from artists of their appearance. BG recounted that some industry figures suggested they alter their sound to fit existing stereotypes. This experience only solidified their commitment to authenticity and a desire to pave their own path.
In February 2025, the Womack Sisters found their match with Daptone Records, which welcomed their innovative approach to music. Their newly released album, characterised by themes of love, heartbreak, and personal growth, features 11 tracks that reflect their experiences and messages they wish to convey. “We’ve had a lot of changes,” BG remarked, acknowledging how grief had influenced their musical expression.
The album includes tracks like “All Around,” which confronts the long-lasting effects of loss, and “You Went Away Too Long,” focusing on the complexities of relationships. Their songwriting captures both the pain of abandonment and the warmth of love, exemplified in tracks like “I Am Your Season” and the playful “If I Let You.” They even crafted a nostalgic nod to their past employment with the vintage-soul-infused “Chauffeur,” recalling their time as drivers.
As they celebrate the release of their debut album, the Womack Sisters are receiving support from notable figures within the industry, including SZA and Erykah Badu, as well as previous collaborator Solange, who has showcased their work on her platform, Saint Heron. This encouragement hints at a promising future for the trio.
