In a recent appearance on the Drifting Cowboy podcast, Nancy opened up about the transformative phase she is currently experiencing. “I’ve missed out on life, and so I’m enjoying life now,” she shared. With a hint of pride, she expressed her satisfaction in having devoted more than three decades to supporting George, stating, “I put 32 years of my life into saving a man. And so that’s why I’m out having a good time now.”
Nancy and George wed in 1983, but shortly thereafter, the challenges of his addiction began to emerge. Despite the turmoil, Nancy will forever stand firm in her belief that George was essentially a good man, albeit one plagued by alcohol and drug abuse. “I knew that the man was with the wrong crowd and they were doing things that I did not approve of,” she said. Driven by a sense of purpose, she committed herself to his recovery, convinced that it was her calling to help him.

In 2023, Nancy published a memoir titled *Playin’ Possum: My Memories of George Jones*, in which she chronicles the difficulties and heartaches she faced during their time together. She acknowledged the strenuous nature of her experience, stating, “I’m not going to say nothing I did was easy. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.” However, she also highlighted the importance of her patience, citing it as critical to George’s recovery.
George ultimately achieved sobriety in 1999 following a near-fatal car crash that required firefighters to use the jaws of life to free him from the wreckage. This traumatic event proved pivotal, leading to a significant turnaround in his life. Nancy recounted how a doctor had warned her to brace herself for the worst, yet George surprised everyone by pulling through and maintaining sobriety until his death from respiratory failure in 2013 at the age of 81.

Reflecting on her late husband’s life, Nancy conveyed her belief that George is now at peace in heaven. She recounted how, from 1999 until his passing, he never returned to drinking or smoking. “I know he’s just having a blast because when he hit that bridge in ‘99, to 2013 he never touched another drink,” she noted.
Their relationship was not without its challenges, as Nancy candidly revealed the abusive aspects of George’s behaviour during his battles with addiction. Despite this, she remained steadfast in her love for him, understanding that the adverse actions were a product of his addiction rather than his true self. “I loved this man, and I knew I was fighting for a good man,” she expressed. To her, those moments of aggression were manifestations of the demons he battled.
Looking ahead, Nancy is planning a significant event to honour her late husband’s legacy. She will host a celebration in Nashville on September 13 to commemorate what would have been George Jones’ 95th birthday. This festivity stands as a testament to her dedication to him, marking both a remembrance of their shared history and a celebration of the love that endured despite the hardships.
As Nancy Jones moves forward with her life, she carries with her the memories of their time together, determined to enjoy every moment. Her unwavering commitment to George’s well-being has reshaped her outlook on life, and now she intends to embrace the joy she once denied herself.
