Vivian Campbell, the esteemed guitarist of Def Leppard, has announced that his battle with Hodgkin lymphoma has taken a significant turn, revealing that the cancer has returned after a previous donor stem cell transplant was unsuccessful in maintaining remission. The 63-year-old musician shared his experience and ongoing plans for treatment with Radio YSKL’s Francisco Sigüenza on August 12.

Since being diagnosed over a decade ago, Campbell has faced numerous challenges due to his condition. Despite being declared in remission last year, the return of the disease has prompted him to reassess his treatment options. The musician explained that the donor transplant became a necessary option after his body’s own stem cells failed to combat the cancer effectively. “Unfortunately, it didn’t stick. So, the cancer has returned,” he conveyed poignantly.

Going forward, Campbell is determined to continue treatments aimed at managing his illness, indicating that another transplant may be on the horizon in the years to come. He stated, “I’ll probably have to do another transplant within a few years with another donor to try and see if maybe that would cure me.” His resolve shines through in his upbeat attitude, insisting, “in the meantime, I’m certainly not slowing down.”
Def Leppard remains active, having recently concluded a residency in Las Vegas, with plans for tours across Mexico and South America this autumn. Campbell attributes part of his resilience to his work, asserting that his ongoing commitments contribute positively to his mental health. “The fact that I could still continue to work gives me something to live for,” he explained. “It’s something that you enjoy, that you’re passionate about, and that you can wake up in the morning and look forward to.”
Campbell also reflected on the importance of remaining active and not allowing cancer to dictate his life. He has observed that many individuals facing similar diagnoses often succumb to fear, expressing sentiments such as, “I can’t do anything. I need to stay in bed.” In contrast, he maintains that a proactive approach is essential. “I’ve always felt like I’m going to continue to live my life as much as possible,” he noted, emphasising how his experience with cancer has strengthened his desire to seize opportunities and enjoy life to the fullest.
He encouraged others dealing with health challenges to prioritise their well-being, suggesting that confronting fear is critical. “Fear is inevitable when you’re first told those words but once you get over that, you have to learn how to manage it and deal with it as best as possible,” he remarked. Campbell’s message is clear: resilience and positivity can profoundly impact one’s approach to illness.
Despite the personal trials he has faced, Campbell’s spirit shines through as he engages with his beloved music and his audience. The guitarist’s unwavering commitment to his craft and his refusal to let cancer define him stand as a powerful motivator for many. He reminds us all of the importance of passion, perseverance, and hope in the face of adversity.
As he navigates this renewed chapter in his health journey, Campbell serves as an inspiration, urging others to embrace life fully. His determination to continue performing signifies not only his love for music but also his profound commitment to enjoying every moment. In a world where health challenges can often feel overwhelming, Campbell’s approach is a striking testament to living life without fear.
