Charles Melton is basking in the glow of his first Emmy nomination as he prepares for the 2026 Emmy Awards, where he is up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role in the acclaimed Netflix series, *Beef*. The ceremony is set to take place on Thursday, 14 September, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, and Melton is taking a moment to reflect on the transformative experiences he has undergone since filming the series.
Since wrapping filming on the second season of *Beef* in June 2025, the 35-year-old actor’s life has taken a turn towards new beginnings. He and wife Camille Summers-Valli welcomed their first child, a daughter, earlier this year. Juggling parenthood alongside his burgeoning career, Melton has also secured roles in two new projects since completing his work on *Beef*. “A lot of life has happened since I finished that show,” Melton said in an interview while preparing lunch on a rare day off in Los Angeles.
In the much-anticipated second season of *Beef*, Melton portrays Austin, a personal trainer with an uncertain future following an engagement to Ashley, played by Cailee Spaeny. The couple’s romance is tested when they witness a violent altercation involving their bosses, played by Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan. Melton’s nomination is particularly significant as he becomes the first mixed-race Korean American to achieve recognition in this category, which he describes as a gratifying representation for audiences who see themselves in him.
The moment of candid happiness was amplified when Melton learned of his nomination while on a family trip in Paris. Describing the experience of receiving the news, he recounted, “I was trying not to tune in,” due to the time difference. After a moment of contemplation, he and his wife tuned into the announcement. “It takes a second to hit,” he explained. “But it’s amazing when anybody gets recognised for their work. For me, I think about the crew, truly. I’m just one of 600 artists who came together to make that show what it was.”
As for the upcoming ceremony, Melton is keeping his plans under wraps, ready to embrace the moment spontaneously. “I think you figure it out on the day. I have such a great team that supports me,” he shared. “To be recognised is enough for me. If there so happens to be a speech, I don’t know. Not really thinking about it.” When asked who might accompany him, he playfully suggested that those curious would need to wait and see.
Interestingly, this Emmy nomination isn’t his first venture into the awards circuit; Melton was previously nominated for a Golden Globe for his leading role alongside Julianne Moore in *May December* earlier this year. His breakout moment came in 2017 when he joined the cast of *Riverdale*, portraying Reggie Mantle. Reflecting on his time with the *Riverdale* cast, whom he affectionately refers to as his “family,” he shared that they were among the first to congratulate him upon hearing the nomination news.
“Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa], the creator of *Riverdale*, was one of the first people to reach out to me. He’s an icon,” Melton said, emphasising the lasting relationships he forged during his time on the show. He noted the significance of the friendships he developed on set, particularly as they now support one another in their respective careers.
Moreover, Melton emphasised that his experiences on set — both during *Riverdale* and *Beef* — have shaped his growth as an actor. He likens the different projects he undertakes to chapters in a journal. “I believe that each filming experience sets you up for the next thing you’re going to do,” he remarked, demonstrating his perspective that every role he plays informs and influences his work moving forward.
As the date of the Emmy Awards approaches, Melton maintains a positive outlook, ready to celebrate his accomplishments and hard work thus far. “I’m not going to these award shows looking for my next job. I already am doing my next job,” he shared, reinforcing his intention to focus on gratitude and celebration rather than solely career advancement.
