Boy Critically Injured After Large Branch Falls at Summer Camp

A distressing incident at YMCA Camp Chickami in Massachusetts left a child in critical condition and a camp counsellor injured after a tree branch fell on them during a summer camp session. The alarming event occurred on Tuesday, August 19, when emergency services were alerted at approximately 10:40 AM. The names and ages of those involved have not been disclosed publicly yet.

First responders from the Wayland Fire and Police Departments arrived promptly at the scene, where they found the young camper suffering from life-threatening injuries. Wayland’s acting police chief, Mark Hebert, provided insight into the circumstances surrounding the tree’s collapse, describing it as a “domino effect” where a large tree fell onto another, leading to the accident. He confirmed that while the camper was struck by a significant branch, a smaller branch hit one of the camp’s counsellors.

Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson remarked on the unexpected nature of the incident, stating, “This is something highly unusual… it’s a wooded area. Natural events happen that we don’t expect.” The suddenness of the event highlights the inherent risks present in outdoor environments, especially during recreational activities.

In response to the incident, the child was airlifted to a regional trauma centre, while the counsellor was taken to a nearby hospital for their injuries. The Wayland Fire Ambulance facilitated the transport of the child to a designated landing zone at Town Hall before the medical helicopter took them to the trauma facility.

Jack Fucci, president and CEO of the West Suburban YMCA, which operates Camp Chickami, issued a public statement expressing concern and support following the incident. He stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with this young camper and their family,” and assured that the camp is providing support services to other campers and staff who witnessed the traumatic event.

In light of the accident, YMCA Camp Chickami closed its doors for the remainder of the day on Tuesday and will remain closed on Wednesday, August 19. The management has committed to keeping the camp community informed and addressing the needs of all those affected by the incident.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the falling branch. Fucci emphasised the importance of understanding how such a tragic event could have occurred, indicating that lessons would be drawn from the investigation to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
