Sydney Segal, known for her participation in the reality show Survivor, is set to make her mark once again as she competes in the new season of The Challenge. Initially hesitant about returning after her debut in season 41, Segal ultimately decided to take part in the latest instalment, which revives the popular Cutthroat format after a significant hiatus.

Reflecting on her initial experience with The Challenge, Segal, 31, expressed doubt about competing again, stating, “I wasn’t gonna do The Challenge again. For me, it was gonna be like a one-time thing, you know, like, take something off the life résumé.” The intensity of the competition proved overwhelming, and she candidly revealed, “I had to do therapy after the show, because I was so screwed up from it.”

The challenges faced during her first season were not just physical but mental, exposing Segal to an environment where the usual rules of engagement do not apply. “All the rules go out the window on The Challenge though. Like, whatever you think you’d do in your regular life, it doesn’t apply, because there’s nothing regular about the situation,” she explained. Segal’s journey culminated in a strong performance, securing a spot in the finale and finishing second alongside her partner, Turbo Çamkıran.
From her complicated experience, Segal adopted an “eat or be eaten” mentality, a strategy that she claims is effective in navigating the competitive landscape. “People fear you. You can really just fake it till you make it in a lot of ways,” she noted. This mentality has extended beyond the show and into her professional life as a public defender. “In court, I’m going to act like I have the best case. I’m going to strong-arm the prosecutor. And now I feel more confident doing that, honestly, after my experience on The Challenge.”
Despite her reservations, the opportunity to return for season 42 was too enticing to ignore. “In my life, I am an opportunist, and you never know what this could lead to,” Segal commented on her decision to rejoin the competition. She finds this season particularly exhilarating due to its shorter format, which could alleviate the suffering often synonymous with reality TV competitions, while also providing a chance for greater financial reward. As a public defender, the prospect of earning extra money is particularly appealing to her.
“This season particularly was much more exciting for me because it was shorter. So even if I was gonna suffer, I was gonna suffer for much less [time] and hopefully make a ton of money. And at the end of the day, I am a public defender, so the extra money is fabulous,” she elaborated. Her desire to contribute to the community also plays a critical role in her decision. “I have a philanthropic spirit, so I couldn’t not do it for the people,” she said, encapsulating her motivation for returning to the challenge.
As part of her preparation, Segal strategically altered her training regimen. “I started lifting more and pushed myself on the track. I’m a distance runner, obviously, as proven on my first season. My cardio is unmatched,” she shared, noting that she completed a sub-hour-30 half-marathon leading up to the competition. Confident in her abilities, Segal plans to focus on her strengths rather than attempting skills in which she feels less adept. “What I’m gonna do is absolutely slay everything I’m already amazing at and make sure to just lock in.”
Sydney Segal’s journey through The Challenge continues when new episodes of The Challenge: Cutthroat are released, with updates dropping on Wednesdays at 12 a.m. PT on Paramount+. With her blend of competitive spirit and dedication to her community, audiences can anticipate a compelling and dynamic performance from her in the upcoming season.
