**Factory Worker Triumphs Over Adversity: Remarkable Recovery After Leg Reattachment Surgery**

A 51-year-old factory worker in China, only identified as Jiang, has made significant strides in his recovery after undergoing an extraordinary leg reattachment procedure. This groundbreaking surgery, performed on December 2, 2024, allowed him to regain the ability to walk following a horrific workplace accident in which he lost both legs.


The incident occurred at a factory where Jiang’s legs were severed by heavy machinery. The severity of his injuries prompted immediate intervention by medical professionals at Suzhou Ruihua Orthopedic Hospital, located approximately 100 kilometres west of Shanghai. The surgical team embarked on an intense overnight operation that lasted nearly eight hours, successfully reattaching both legs to Jiang’s thighs.
According to Dr Li Changsong, the director of the trauma orthopaedics department at the hospital, Jiang’s recovery has been remarkable. He can now walk indoors with the assistance of a walker, marking a significant milestone in his rehabilitation journey. Dr Changsong shared that sensation has returned to Jiang’s lower limbs, extending down to his ankles, an encouraging indication of nerve recovery following the traumatic injury.
“This is an ongoing recovery process,” Dr Changsong stated. “In the long term, we expect Jiang to gradually transition away from using crutches and ultimately achieve independent walking.” The commitment to rehabilitative training appears essential, with doctors estimating that Jiang has already undergone 20 months of intensive physical therapy to regain mobility.
Despite the progress made, Jiang’s journey has not been without challenges. He faced several complications following the surgery, including skin necrosis—a condition whereby blood flow to specific tissues or organs is compromised. Additionally, he suffered a comminuted fracture, characterised by a bone breaking in multiple places, which necessitated further medical attention. The hard work and perseverance demonstrated during his rehabilitation have allowed him to progress remarkably, despite these setbacks.
In March 2025, Jiang experienced a noteworthy milestone when he finally had external fixators removed. These devices, typically comprising pins and screws, were crucial in stabilising his bones as he began to regain strength. Following the removal, Jiang demonstrated the ability to lift his legs while lying in bed, signifying a return of sensation that extended to his mid-calf. Subsequently, he was discharged from the hospital, a testament to his remarkable resilience.
Photographs that accompanied reports from the Yangtse Evening Post showcase Jiang using a walking frame, revealing scars across his legs—a poignant reminder of the ordeal he has faced. Another image depicted the surgical site where his legs were reattached, highlighting the extensive nature of his injuries and the complexity of the medical intervention he received.
While Jiang’s recovery has been inspiring, further assessments will determine when he can walk unaided. Dr Changsong remarked on the individuality of recovery processes, noting, “Everyone’s recovery is different, and we need to continue to observe his muscle strength, nerve sensation, and fracture healing.” Encouragingly, he also reported that Jiang is in overall good health, with both legs measuring approximately the same length after the reattachment.
