Man, 31, Rescued Alive After Being Trapped in Underwater Cave for 15 Days Without Food

A fisherman’s 15-day ordeal in an underwater cave in Mexico has ended with a dramatic rescue, capturing national attention and highlighting the extraordinary efforts of emergency services. Erasto Crisanto Valdez, 31, was reported missing on July 23 while fishing in a cenote in the municipality of San Francisco La Paz. His disappearance sparked a substantial search operation involving land, river, and air resources, which ultimately culminated in a successful rescue on August 7.

According to the Municipal Government of Uxpanapa (MGU), Valdez vanished while exploring the depths of the cenote alongside his father. In a translated statement made from his hospital bed, Valdez recounted the terrifying experience of becoming disoriented while swimming. “I could hear the lake, but I couldn’t see a thing. I had no way of knowing whether it was day or night,” he said. He managed to keep his spirits up during the ordeal, expressing gratitude for the air chamber and water supply he unexpectedly found. “Those 15 days felt like only three days to me,” he noted, attributing his survival largely to his faith.
