In a distressing incident that has drawn attention across the nation, Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) has successfully rescued 47 animals from a property in Tennessee associated with a sanctuary currently under investigation for potential animal cruelty. This group of animals, which includes 37 dogs—six of which were nursing puppies—has been provided with medical care and support as the investigation unfolds.

The operation, termed “Operation Money Trail,” was initiated on Monday, August 11, when ARC officials intervened at a facility in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Alongside the dogs, the rescue team brought in seven chickens, two turkeys, and a pig, all of whom were discovered in unsatisfactory conditions. The animals were found in pens filled with waste and debris, highlighting the neglect they faced.

The property is linked to Cane-9 Rescue and Sanctuary, whose founder, Jennifer Lovette Caneup, along with her brother-in-law, Joshua Caneup, has been arrested in a separate investigation for alleged animal cruelty and fraudulent activities. Reports indicate that search warrants were executed at various locations associated with the sanctuary, intensifying scrutiny around its operations.
Tim Woodward, the executive director of Animal Rescue Corps, described the situation as “deeply disturbing,” shedding light on a concerning trend where organisations present themselves as legitimate rescues while, in reality, misusing donations intended for the welfare of distressed animals. Woodward expressed uncertainty about whether the current case is a result of a “rescue gone wrong” or if it stems from deliberate deception, where individuals exploit the goodwill of donors under the guise of animal rescue.
“Unfortunately, the tragic result is the same,” Woodward commented in an exclusive interview, as he raised awareness about the prevalence of such cases across the country. He cautioned potential donors to remain vigilant about the authenticity of the organisations they support, noting the risks associated with altruism misdirected towards unscrupulous entities.
The conditions inside the facility were alarming, with investigators discovering numerous deceased animals in addition to those that were rescued. Among the findings were remains of several goats, a piglet, and many birds. One turkey, suffering from severe and untreated injuries, was recommended for euthanasia by veterinarians due to the extent of its suffering.
Air quality tests conducted within the property revealed dangerously high levels of ammonia, which posed significant respiratory risks to the animals. Many of the dogs exhibited clear signs of maltreatment, including dehydration, malnourishment, ear and eye infections, internal parasites, and skin issues such as ringworm.
Since their rescue, ARC has committed to providing thorough medical examinations and necessary treatments for the animals. A representative confirmed that all animals are responding positively to the initial care they have received. Following their rescue, the dogs were given baths to cleanse them of the filth and odours they had accumulated, a process which resulted in a notable transformation. Comparatively, the dogs’ behaviour improved significantly; where they had once stood frozen in silence, they were now animated and eager for attention.
The rescued dogs have been relocated to ARC’s facility near Nashville, where they will continue to receive veterinary care, vaccinations, behavioural support, and a safe environment to heal. In parallel, the farm animals, including the surviving poultry and pig, have found refuge at Piccolo Farms Animal Sanctuary, a partner organisation dedicated to the care of farm animals.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are working diligently to ascertain the full extent of the situation surrounding Cane-9 Rescue and Sanctuary. The plight of these animals serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced in the realm of animal welfare and the need for citizens to approach donations with awareness and caution.
