Dustin Folkes, a former Marine, has carved out a remarkable career as a bodyguard, offering protection to some of the most famous faces in the world, including Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, and the Beckham family. His transition from military service to celebrity security exemplifies a unique journey that blends discipline and adaptability, tracing a path that few can imagine.
Folkes’ military background is noteworthy. He served with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, undertaking several challenging tours that included deployments to Iraq and disaster relief operations in Indonesia following the 2004 tsunami. Reflecting on this period, Folkes reveals the difficulties he faced upon returning to civilian life. “Coming out of the Marine Corps, I thought, ‘What do I do with this skillset?’” he recalls. The uncertainties of what lay ahead were daunting, prompting thoughts of pursuing a career with the Los Angeles Sheriffs.

Unexpectedly, while navigating the application process for law enforcement, an opportunity arose from Gavin de Becker & Associates, a prominent security firm renowned for its role in protecting public figures. “At the time, I wasn’t in the celebrity loop,” said Folkes, who grew up in San Clemente and had little interest in the lives of the rich and famous. Nevertheless, he entertained the offer that would dramatically change his career trajectory, igniting a professional journey in celebrity security.

Since embarking on this new path, Folkes has worked with an impressive roster of clients, including household names like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Shaun White. “Success breeds success,” he explains, indicating how each client’s unique demands led to further opportunities within the burgeoning celebrity culture.
After spending four and a half years at the security firm, Folkes established his own private security business. He attributes his success in this demanding field to effective communication. “Being hyper-aware of everything and willing to go above and beyond is essential,” he said, emphasising that his role often extends beyond traditional security measures. He underscores that the willingness to assist with various tasks—no matter how trivial they may seem—can greatly contribute to a seamless experience for clients.
Beyond physical safety measures, Folkes believes that establishing rapport with clients is paramount. “Many in this field are hesitant to communicate directly with their clients,” he pointed out. “I approach it differently—if you hire me, it’s because you trust my expertise. Open dialogue can mitigate potential issues and is crucial during emergencies.” This approach, according to Folkes, enhances both security and overall client satisfaction.
Although Folkes retired from full-time work in the security sector last summer, he continues to provide part-time services for select clients. In his spare time, he is now focused on launching his clothing brand, VYZN Apparel, and penning a memoir detailing his remarkable career. Titled “Day in the Life of a Celebrity Bodyguard,” the book promises to share insights from his journey while navigating the complexities of celebrity culture.
In preparation for this memoir, Folkes has had to navigate a labyrinth of non-disclosure agreements with past clients. While he encountered challenges with some who had stringent contracts, he was fortunate to receive approval from most, ensuring his stories could be shared. “This isn’t a salacious tell-all—I’m not here to bash anyone. It’s the story of a kid from San Clemente who became a Marine and then a bodyguard,” he clarifies.
The memoir will also delve into Folkes’ early experiences in Iraq, recalling the unexpected challenges of humanitarian work during military operations, a stark contrast to traditional combat training. “The chaotic aftermath in Indonesia after the tsunami was particularly striking,” he reflects. “It forced us to confront a different kind of reality, one focused on relief rather than engagement.”
As he looks back over two decades in celebrity protection, Folkes finds it astonishing how far he has come. “It’s been a wild ride, and I’m hitting my 20th year now. I still can’t believe it,” he admits with a sense of disbelief. From his unexpected beginnings to his current status as a sought-after bodyguard, Dustin Folkes serves as a testament to the unpredictable and often incredible pathways of life.
