The 50-year-old father, alongside his sons aged five and seven, had rented the jet ski from a local operator around 5 p.m. that Thursday. After failing to return as expected, concern quickly grew among the rental operator, who promptly notified authorities to initiate a search operation. This decision proved vital in ensuring their recovery.

Search efforts commenced immediately, incorporating speedboats and jet skis as rescuers scoured the waters around Ko Samui. However, when the darkness of night fell, efforts were temporarily halted and resumed the following morning. The family was eventually located at approximately 10 a.m. on Friday, 14th August.
Local government official, Amorn Chomchoey, reported that the rescued individuals were visibly weak and distressed. According to Chomchoey, “They were exhausted after swallowing a lot of seawater,” highlighting the alarming state in which they were found. He noted that the children appeared particularly pale, indicating the toll that the ordeal had taken on them.
Upon their rescue, the family was transported to a nearby hospital for medical assessment. Fortunately, all three were discharged shortly thereafter, allowing them to continue their holiday in Thailand, despite the traumatic experience.
Meanwhile, investigators are probing the circumstances surrounding the capsizing of the jet ski. Preliminary reports from the rental operator suggest that the family may have strayed beyond the confines stipulated in their rental contract, potentially contributing to the incident. This has raised concerns about the safety protocols in place for water activities in the area.
Footage from the rescue showed the jet ski submerged, with only the front portion above water. One of the boys was perched on the almost completely submerged jet ski while their father was seen in the water nearby, both of them fortunately wearing life jackets. This has raised appreciation for the importance of safety gear during such activities.
When the family was brought back ashore, the boys’ mother and older sister were anxiously awaiting their return on the beach. The emotional reunion underscored the harrowing ordeal they had just faced and the relief that followed their safe return.
Ko Samui, Thailand’s third-largest island, is renowned for its beautiful beaches like Chaweng and Lamai, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking leisure and adventure. The incident has highlighted the importance of vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines when engaging in recreational water sports.
As the family continues their holiday, local authorities are urged to review safety measures associated with jet ski rentals to prevent such incidents in the future. This event serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of water sports and the critical need for preparedness and caution.
