An Oklahoma teenager, Kate Sweeney, has bravely shared her experience of surviving intimate partner violence in an effort to raise awareness and help others. At just 18 years old, Sweeney has revealed details about her relationship with Jesse Butler, who has pleaded no contest to multiple charges, including sexual assault and strangulation. The case, however, ended controversially when a judge dismissed all charges against Butler, who was born into a prominent local family, having served no prison time.

In an exclusive interview aired on “Good Morning America,” Sweeney described how the experience has fundamentally changed her life. “This has flipped my world upside down and that’s not something you can erase,” she remarked, emphasising the long-lasting impact of her ordeal. The case against Butler, which began in March 2025 following an investigation into allegations of assault, ended on August 3, just one day before Butler’s 19th birthday.
Initially charged with serious offenses including first-degree rape and domestic assault, Butler’s case went through various legal changes due to his age. When he was 17 at the time of his arrest, the court later classified him as a youthful offender. Instead of facing significant jail time, he was ordered to complete rehabilitation, counselling, and community service. Reflecting on her first encounter with Butler, Sweeney revealed that she was only 16 when the relationship began. While at first, everything seemed positive, she soon found herself in a progressively abusive situation. “Over time, it just kept getting worse,” she explained. “But since it was such a slow progression, I didn’t understand how big of a deal it was whenever it was actively happening.”
Sweeney’s parents have expressed their shock and disappointment regarding the outcome of Butler’s case. They initially welcomed him into their family, noting he had made a good impression by bringing flowers and planning special dates for their daughter. However, as months progressed, they noticed a shift in Sweeney’s behaviour, leading to the distressing revelation of her experiences of abuse.
Reflecting on the impact of her experiences, Sweeney has had to adapt considerably. “She doesn’t have her high school friends anymore,” her mother, Ivonne, lamented. “And she’s … I’ll never have a prom picture or a graduation picture because she doesn’t want to walk.” Sweeney ultimately completed her senior year of high school online and graduated with a remarkable 4.0 GPA, a testament to her resilience.
The legal resolution of Butler’s case has sparked controversy, especially with claims made by his defence attorney that suggested Butler was himself a victim. Sweeney found these allegations outrageous and insisted that if he truly believed in his innocence, he would have opted for a full trial instead of accepting a plea deal. The district attorney overseeing the case has also expressed outrage over the assertions made by Butler’s team, calling them “inappropriate”.
In addition to seeking awareness through her personal story, Sweeney has initiated a civil lawsuit against Butler and other parties. Butler’s family has responded by expressing confidence that the truth would come out during litigation, maintaining that her family’s allegations lack merit.
Despite the outcome of Butler’s criminal case, Sweeney remains focused on positives that may arise from her struggles.
