Actress Jennifer Esposito has shared her deeply personal journey regarding the intersection of physical and mental health, revealing the considerable toll her undiagnosed celiac disease inflicted on her life. In a candid appearance on Maria Menounos’ Heal Squad podcast, Esposito spoke about a battle that began long before her diagnosis, which came approximately 15 years ago.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects how individuals process gluten, leading to a series of painful and debilitating symptoms. Esposito recounted her experiences of suffering throughout her childhood and into her twenties. She described various physical issues, including gastrointestinal distress, hair loss, and deteriorating nails, but it was the psychological impact that proved particularly harrowing. “I was told every different thing,” she explained, reflecting on the confusion and frustration of not receiving a clear diagnosis despite numerous medical consultations.

The ordeal escalated to the point where Esposito experienced severe panic attacks and even agoraphobia, forcing her to return to her parents’ home. “The panic attacks started to get so bad that I wound up becoming agoraphobic,” she recalled. In the depths of this struggle, she experienced suicidal thoughts and a profound sense of depression. Efforts to seek help included therapy and medications, yet her condition only seemed to worsen. “It was a really bad time,” she said, highlighting the vast range of treatments she attempted, including some extreme options.

Professionally, Esposito continued to work through her illness, starring in the television series *Samantha Who*. However, her health was deteriorating visibly; she described a particularly distressing incident where a tooth fell out during filming. “I was mortified but also had been so ill that I went hysterical,” she said, emphasising her desperate need for assistance. Prior to her definitive diagnosis, doctors suspected conditions such as multiple sclerosis or irritable bowel syndrome, adding to her mental turmoil.
Determined to get answers, Esposito sought out a doctor in Los Angeles who had a more questioning approach. She vividly recalled the anxiety that enveloped her while waiting for blood test results, fearing an absence of diagnosis would confirm her worst fears of being deemed ‘crazy’. When the results arrived, the diagnosis was grim—a severe case of celiac disease. The doctor explained that her liver was failing, commenting that it was a miracle she was still alive.
Following her diagnosis, Esposito attempted to adjust her diet by removing gluten, yet her mental health plummeted during the detox process. “They had me on four Klonopin a day, and I was still a trembling mess,” she shared, highlighting the intense struggle she faced. These challenges ultimately led her to work closely with a health expert who aimed to understand the connection between her physical and mental health issues. However, what happened next took her by surprise.
Upon requesting tests to check her vitamin levels, Esposito found herself unintentionally admitted to a psychiatric ward merely half an hour later. She described the ordeal as “seven of the most excruciating hours” of her life, during which she continued to implore for recognition of her mental state rather than it being dismissed as a psychological anomaly. “They thought I was going to harm myself,” she recalled, a stark testament to the depth of her despair.
This tumultuous chapter served as the catalyst for Esposito to begin writing her book, *Jennifer’s Way: My Journey with Celiac Disease*. The project was not only a means to document her experiences but also a way to reach out to others who might be struggling with similar issues.
As she shared her story during the podcast, Esposito emphasised the importance of recognising the connection between physical and mental health, especially for those with chronic medical conditions. Her experiences shed light on the often-overlooked struggles faced by individuals battling invisible illnesses and the critical need for understanding and compassion in both healthcare settings and wider society.
If you or someone you know is facing mental health challenges or emotional distress, it is vital to seek help. Resources such as text lines and mental health organisations are available to provide support around the clock. Esposito’s narrative serves as a poignant reminder that dialogue surrounding health—be it physical or psychological—can make a significant difference in the lives of many.
