Matthew McConaughey has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to play Joel Miller in HBO’s acclaimed series “The Last of Us.” The actor disclosed this information during a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, hosted by Joshua Horowitz. McConaughey stated that he received the script during a period when he was stepping back from acting to focus on writing and exploring leadership roles in his life.

While the script for “The Last of Us” intrigued him, McConaughey felt it wasn’t the right time to take on such a significant role. Reflecting on his career decisions, McConaughey remarked, “I think that’s part of when I was doing more writing and looking at leadership roles in life and stuff.” He acknowledged that he was not fully engaged with acting during that phase, even though he found the script “really good” and was initially excited about it.

McConaughey, who gained widespread acclaim for his work on “True Detective,” noted that he isn’t an avid watcher of television series. He pointed out how the landscape of television was different during his time on “True Detective,” when actors of his calibre were less inclined to join the small screen. Despite recognizing the potential success of “The Last of Us,” he reiterated that it simply wasn’t the right fit for him at that moment.

In a further conversation on the podcast, McConaughey explained his writing process, emphasising the need for focus and commitment when developing creative material. He prefers to dedicate several weeks exclusively to writing, believing that having other distractions could undermine the quality of his work. “If I’ve got certain stuff going on in my life, I know that I’m not going to give that script justice,” he admitted.
The show’s creator, Craig Mazin, also appeared on the podcast last year. He offered insights into the casting process for Joel. According to Mazin, while there were discussions with McConaughey, they were not formal. The initial conversations were more exploratory rather than serious negotiations regarding the role. Pedro Pascal, the actor who ultimately secured the part, was initially thought to be unavailable at the time the casting process began.
Mazin recounted how they initially considered various actors for Joel, but when Pascal’s availability suddenly changed, he jumped on the opportunity. Sent the script while filming in England, Mazin was pleasantly surprised when he received a call from Pascal just a day later expressing his enthusiasm for the role. Mazin described the subsequent Zoom meeting as “perhaps the most wonderful Zoom I’ve ever had,” indicating a strong chemistry between the two.
Although Mazin acknowledged that McConaughey would have been a strong choice for the character, he expressed satisfaction with the outcome stating, “I’m sure there’s an alternate universe where it’s different, and look, Matthew McConaughey is an amazing actor. I’m sure it would have been great. But it would have been different, and I like the one that we made.”
“The Last of Us,” based on a 2013 action-adventure video game, premiered in January 2023. It has since garnered considerable acclaim, racking up an impressive 40 Emmy nominations and winning nine, with Pascal receiving nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Joel—a father struggling to survive in a devastated world.
With fans eagerly anticipating the future of the series, the third season of “The Last of Us” is tentatively scheduled for release in 2027, ensuring that viewers will continue to engage with the gripping narrative and the characters that have become beloved following its successful debut. The series is currently available for streaming on HBO, where it continues to attract a wide audience and critical appreciation.
