In an innovative approach to family living, interior designer Caitlin Swann has created a unique solution for her parents, allowing them to stay close while maintaining their independence. Located in Fairfield, Connecticut, Swann constructed a “granny pod,” also known as an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), which now serves as a cosy home for her parents in her own backyard.

The idea came to light when Swann’s parents contemplated selling their long-time home and relocating. After moving into her new residence in 2023 with her husband and three children, Swann reflected on her parents’ situation. It was a serendipitous moment when an advertisement for a granny pod appeared on her Facebook feed, prompting a conversation with her parents about their future living arrangements.

Initially, Swann shared the ad as a light-hearted joke, not expecting her mother to take the suggestion seriously. However, to her surprise, her mother responded positively, stating, “That’s brilliant.” This unexpected enthusiasm inspired the family to consider the prospect of building an ADU on Swann’s property.
Before proceeding, Swann and her husband ensured that local zoning laws permitted the construction of the pod. Given their strong family bond, the couple felt comfortable making the pivotal decision to create this living space for her parents. “My parents are really respectful,” Swann said of the arrangement, adding, “they’re not overbearing and are extremely helpful. They go to bed really early.”
The financial responsibility for the building project fell to Swann’s parents, while she took charge of the design and construction of the 725-square-foot unit. Overseeing the details alongside a local design team, Swann meticulously crafted the space to feel welcoming and homely. She recalled her mother’s reluctance to make decisions, but Swann ensured to include her in the design process to guarantee satisfaction.
Commencing in May 2025, the construction of the granny pod was completed in November of the same year, just in time for her parents to settle in before Thanksgiving. Since moving in, her parents have not only adapted to their new living situation seamlessly but have also embraced their newfound lifestyle in close proximity to family. Swann reported that they have quickly established a comforting routine, with her mother joining local pickleball groups and her father enjoying daily walks to the beach.
Although her parents spend their winters in Florida and occasionally visit Swann’s siblings, they predominantly enjoy their time in Connecticut. The opportunity to have her parents just a stone’s throw away has been a transformative experience for Swann. She expressed that this closeness, allowing for spontaneous family gatherings and babysitting duties, has been nothing short of a blessing.
Reflecting on her family’s past, Swann pointed out the significance of their current arrangement, especially given that she had lived two hours away from them for nearly 15 years. “Having them 20 steps away when you realise how short life is and you don’t know how long you have together, it’s been such a blessing,” she stated.
In a world where multigenerational living is becoming increasingly common, Caitlin Swann’s granny pod encapsulates the spirit of family unity while providing an independent space for her parents. This arrangement not only offers practical benefits but also enriches family bonds, illustrating the profound joy that can arise from such innovative solutions.
