A man has been accused of setting fire to the historic South Bushwick Reformed Church in Brooklyn, a structure that has stood for 173 years. The church, which is recognised as both a New York City Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was severely damaged during a blaze that occurred in June.

The individual charged in connection with this incident is 24-year-old John Jones. He was arrested on 5 August, shortly after alleged evidence surfaced in the form of a notebook containing unsettling content. According to prosecutors, Jones admitted to starting the fire that led to the church’s destruction. He is set to face arraignment in federal court on 7 August.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured Jones attempting to gain entry into the church on 19 June, before he was seen purchasing a lighter from a nearby shop. Just moments later, he was filmed loitering around the church grounds just before smoke began to billow from the structure. The inferno caused irreparable damage to the church, culminating in the roof collapsing.
Nine days after the fire, Jones was apprehended on unrelated charges involving the vandalism of a television set outside a restaurant in Brooklyn. At that time, he faced a charge of criminal mischief. Following a series of court appearances and missed appointments, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest on 17 July when he failed to show up in court. He was subsequently taken into custody again on 5 August in Manhattan on a petty theft charge.
During the earlier arrest, police discovered a notebook in Jones’ possession filled with alarming phrases. Prosecutors described the contents as including disturbing references to violence, with phrases such as “murder them” and “kill them,” alongside numerous misspellings of the word “church.” This has raised grave concerns regarding his intentions at the time.
In addition to the South Bushwick Reformed Church fire, it is claimed that Jones admitted to attempting to set another church ablaze in Brooklyn. Such admissions have intensified the focus on his actions and mental state.
Despite the devastation wrought upon the church, its leaders remain resolute in their determination to rebuild. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched, which has successfully raised approximately £20,000. The funds are earmarked not only for a temporary worship space but also for the procurement of replacement equipment and ongoing reparation efforts for the historic church.
