On July 25, Winkelman approached the home of his neighbours, specifically expressing his frustration about the noise levels emanating from the residence. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, he became agitated after questioning those present about the activities taking place. Events quickly escalated when, following a comment made by 38-year-old Jessica Lashly, Winkelman drew a firearm and shot her in the head. Tragically, her 17-year-old daughter, Jersey Greer, attempted to come to her mother’s aid and was also shot in the head.

Authorities reported that Winkelman then pursued a third individual but did not harm that person. Deputies arrived on the scene shortly after 8 p.m. to find the situation had become severely critical. Upon confrontation with law enforcement outside his own home, Winkelman inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound upon himself. Both the victims and Winkelman were transported to local hospitals, where Lashly and Greer were later pronounced dead.
The mother and daughter were well-regarded in their community, and the news of their passing has left many devastated. Loved ones have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for medical and funeral expenses, describing the loss as “unimaginable.” The campaign expresses the sorrow felt by many, stating, “Our hearts are broken for their family, friends, teammates, and everyone whose lives they touched. As they navigate this unimaginable loss, we ask for your continued prayers, love, and support.”
Justice Greer, the twin sister of Jersey, recently spoke out about the courage shown by her sister in her final moments. She remarked on how Jersey endeavoured to save their mother when confronted with such danger, reflecting deeply on the bravery her sister exhibited. “It just shows how brave she is, and I hope I can be half as brave as she is,” Justice said.
Winkelman’s actions have sparked significant concern and questions within the community regarding his mental state and ongoing frustrations. An arrest warrant had previously been issued for him, charging him with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action as the investigation unfolded.
On August 2, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Robert Winkelman had succumbed to his injuries from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators indicated that Winkelman’s frustrations had been mounting over some time, with ongoing issues regarding the noise from his neighbours potentially contributing to his extreme actions.
Friends and family members of Jessica and Jersey have been grief-stricken by the double tragedy, and efforts to support those affected by this crime continue. Local community members have rallied to assist with the family’s immediate needs during this difficult time, providing support and advocating for further discussions around noise regulations and conflict resolution to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
As investigations linger into the events leading up to this horrific incident, there is a palpable sense of loss throughout the community. Many are hoping that further discussions on neighbourhood disputes and mental health support can stem from this tragedy to prevent further incidents of violence rooted in frustration.
