Micropreemie, Who Was Born Weighing Less Than 2 Lbs., Marks 100 Days in the NICU with Surprise Photo Shoot

In a heartwarming celebration of resilience, Kaci Phillips, a new mother from Evansville, Indiana, expressed her deep gratitude for the critical milestones achieved by her daughter, Avery, who has spent her early life in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Avery was born prematurely at just 25 weeks and 3 days, weighing merely 1 lb. 5.9 oz., facing a tough journey from the onset.

Kaci’s difficulties began when she was diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome, a rare and serious pregnancy complication affecting her blood and liver health. In light of this precarious start, the family’s daily life has been significantly influenced by Avery’s prolonged NICU stay, prompting Kaci to adopt a philosophy of celebrating every small achievement along the way.

“We have learned to take things one day at a time and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small,” Kaci stated. “While it has been emotionally challenging, it has also made us more grateful and intentional about spending time together as a family.”

Since Avery’s admission to Ascension St. Vincent Evansville in April, Kaci has commended the supportive environment created by the NICU staff. Describing her experience as “phenomenal,” she highlighted the expert care provided by doctors, nurses, and therapists who have guided her family through their toughest moments.

“Avery’s care team has been incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate. We couldn’t have asked for a better group to take care of our precious girl,” Kaci remarked, outlining the emotional and physical support the NICU team has offered during this challenging time.

To honour Avery’s significant milestone of 100 days in the NICU, the dedicated care team orchestrated a delightful celebration. Unbeknownst to Kaci, they had dressed Avery in a charming custom outfit, styled whimsically as a little old lady. This surprise brought joy to the family during what could have been a bittersweet occasion.

“They mentioned they usually make a ‘100-day hat’ for babies who reach that milestone. I think social media like Pinterest and TikTok inspired them to create a little old lady ensemble for Avery,” Kaci recalled. Her expression of surprise and delight captures the deep connections formed between families and the NICU staff.

Despite having bypassed the traditional newborn photos due to Avery’s extended hospital stay, Kaci acknowledged the importance of the memories being created through these moments. She expressed her appreciation for the NICU staff, who not only care for their patients but also capture these experiences in photographs for families to cherish.

“While we may not have conventional newborn photos, we are incredibly grateful to the doctors and nurses for celebrating these significant milestones with us,” Kaci shared. “They ensure we have lasting memories that we will treasure as she grows older.”
